telling a FC they're having a good round

I always know exactly how far over par I am so wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I never mention it if others are playing well though.

i dont need telling what sort of round im having ,i keep my own score and know exactly what i have scored .
when im marking a card and we get halfway round i always ask the person whos card im marking do you want to know your score .nine times out of ten they will already know anyway.

I don't even bother adding up after 9 holes normally. Quite often the guy I'm marking the card for will ask me somewhere early in the back nine if I agree with his score and I don't have a clue.

Like a lot of others I know what my own score is all the way round. However I won't tell a PP how he's doing unless specifically asked and even then would try not to be too specific if I could get away with it. I'll always praise a good tee shot etc, as that's a world away from telling them they are playing well

This happened to me on Saturday, knew I was playing well but because of this I hadn't even thought about my score (1st time in a long while)

Stood on the 18th fairway 130 yards away from green and he turns to me and says par here and you'll be cut 1.6, superb play. I then proceeded to make double, humph!

Appalling manners to tell someone they are playing well. Blimey. Someone hits a cracking shot and you all walk on in silence? I would not mention a score or if they are in with a chance of winning but to not compliment a good shot seems odd to me. Say it with a smile, we are meant to playing for fun. I'm very happy to hear someone say good shot to me, rare thing mind.

World of difference in saying nice drive, and saying wow, you're driving well today, you've not missed a fairway. But, you're only on the 12th. Good shot, fine, more than that, leave it out.

I don't tend to say anything now other than compliments on good shots. If you mention score or if they have a chance of winning then people can get funny and take it the wrong way. Inference that their handicap may be wrong or that you are playing mind games despite good intentions.

On the flip side I prefer people not to say it to me but it's not a big problem if they did.

im sure a few people use the you are playing well card ,to put people off.
if im going to put someone off i just ask them if they breathe in or out when they play a shot .

not nice of me i know ,but it has worked on the odd time.

That's some pause you have on the top of your backswing when did you start doing that?

It’s amazing how fragile the mind can be for some

Get told you’re playing well and the round goes to pot
Wait more than 30 seconds to take shot and the round goes to pot
Sparrow breaks wind on backswing and the round goes to pot
Have a disagreement on a rule and the round goes to pot
See someone with shirt un-tucked and the round goes to pot
Putt hits old pitch mark and the round goes to pot
Ball finds divot hole and the round goes to pot
Etc
Etc

Does it affect your work & home life the same way?

Boss: You’re doing well, keep this up and you’re in with a shout of a pay-rise... Proceed to collapse, miss deadlines and receive written warning!
Other half: Really nice meal you cooked, keep this up and you’re in with a shout of a nice treat... Proceed to burn next meal & poison spouse!

Save money on your CF clubs, Pro lessons, laser/GPS and flightscope sessions and buy a man size chill pill :D

The mind isn't fragile it's deluded. The key is to accept you will hit bad shots and there is nothing you can do about it. I try not to even think about the result - just swing the club, hit the ball and accept the result. It's amazing how much calmer I stay with that attitude than years gone by.

Yep - all of them. The only one you missed was "take clubs out of locker, round goes to pot".

If youre playing well then you already know that, being told your score is no big deal.

The only thing that brasses me off is the person who can't be gentlemanly enough to acknowledge the odd lifetime best shot with the occasional "good shot"!

I always add the score after 9 and check it with my FC, I almost always double check their score after each hole

Golf karma has its way of evening things out usually.

I can often start really well and mess up the last few holes to even out. Or start really poorly and recover steadily to finish well.

I'll always compliment a good shot. 'Nice drive' 'lovely strike' 'perfect line well done' all the usual gibberish we spout.

Always tot up at 9 and confirm with partners what we have going out, we usually always know what we are shooting'

Would never tell someone they're playing well, if they are, they'll know anyway.

What I hate, is when my putts are lipping out or finishing on the edge and nothing will drop, is the big old dramatic 'ooooohhh' or 'its in' just as it goes sailing past by 6ft.

^^^^^ Not even worth me posting now, this is all I was going to say!

If you don't say I hit a good shot I will, out loud, if you don't say your playing well... Likely I will. Boost boost boost! I want to boost friends up and myself, I want people to feel good in anything I am doing with them. Banter is fun and I love being the victim and the reverse but I do love to give people a compliment. The world is full of people who want to put you down... It does not have to be like that.

In what insane situation can some of the above be for real. When you are all giving yourselves a good kicking its "rude" to give you a boost... WOW.

Although I've personally experienced this, I took at as a reminder than I wasn't in control of my round psychologically.

Frankly, we could all do with being better in this area. Practice it, how do you react when you're doing well? how about doing badly? have you visualised these eventualities?

Many people learn over time how to cope with bad shots, shrugging it off, focussing on the next one, but fewer people practice how to handle doing well, it should however be part of your mental preparation. Have a plan in mind when this happens so it doesn't become the focal point.

Its funny how the mind works. I also play golf with my father in law, he's a great player and I've only beaten him once. The last time we played I knew I'd played well but still thought he was ahead of me. So on the 18th tee, he plays his usual perfect drive, I hit a nice strike but into a bunker. Proceed to then take 2 shots out of the bunker and that was it, mentally i was in the bar having a beer. He hit a 5 for par, I took 7.

Totting up the scores afterwards, we finished on exactly the same score for the round. Absolutely gutted. Couldn't help but think 'if I'd known it was that close I'd have tried harder on the last' etc etc! But the chances are, had I known I would still have messed it up.

Mad this game of ours.

Great analogy about the workplace scenario above, completely true. I wonder why that is.
