Has anyone else noticed this? She who must be obeyed pointed out that very few of the American team actually take their hats off when shaking hands at the end of the match. Are we just old fashioned or what?

They don't tend to do it much on their tour anyway. I think a few of the old players like Furyk and Cink do ans they've been brought up with it more but not something you see the younger ones doing. More ignorance than anything I think

Its just the American way. I don't think its ignorance or arrogance. It's just the American way. You play golf in America, pop into the clubhouse for a beer and the majority are still wearing their caps. They eat with them on as well.

Christ, pop into Turnberry on any given day and in the restaurant I can guarantee that their will be a Yank with their cap on.

It doesn't bother me.

Its to show there is nothing under hand or underhat.
Common rules, just shows how liberated the americans are.
Its a british custom and we are on british soil by the way.
I always take my hat of to shake hands.
And doff it to a lady.

I take off my hat to shake hands, but it doesn't worry me one little bit if the other person doesn't do it.

I also stand up when a lady leaves a table and hold open doors for others, just the way I was brought up.

Never understood that pish, another one of the games stupid crusty traditions.

I couldn't give a toss if my opponent kept his hat on,what difference does it make? :D

What's the problem with traditions?

golfs a gentleman's game

You one of those guys who wears his Lacoste shell suit pretending it's your waterproofs with a big fake gold chain hang out of it and dragging your trolley across tee's and greens.

It's thinking like that which has contributed to the state of young people in this country today wasters with no respect or manners.

Golf has to move with the times though, otherwise we'd still be wearing a shirt, tie and suit to play.

It's not about golf. it's manners you wouldn't cut between a herse and the limo behind you let them go together you wouldn't sit on a train and let a pregnant women stand, you wouldn't brush passed a old women to get into a shop while she try s to get out you let her go 1st I am 31 not an old man nothing wrong with having manners and good etiquette.

Golfchat, I think your reply to Dodger was a blind comment considering you haven't even met him. I have and I have met his Dad who would have given him a clip round the ear if he didn't respect the etiquette of this fine game. Al is a fine golfer with respect for the game, the course and his fellow golfers. I would take my cap off but I wouldn't gt in a huff if my oppo didn't. I am all grown up you see.

How about showing your manners and winding your neck in!

"you wouldn't cut between a herse and the limo behind you let them go together" - not if I'm late for my tee time! Sod 'em! They're dead anyway, they won't mind.

"you wouldn't sit on a train and let a pregnant women stand" - do you use public transport? I do. Everyday. It's NUFF expensive (Leftie, that's 'enough' to you). If I get a seat - NO-ONE takes it from me! Anyway, if they sit down they'll just get more fat and more varicose veins so I'm actually doing them a favour.

"you wouldn't brush passed a old women to get into a shop while she try s to get out you let her go 1st" - absolute wibble! I work Monday to Friday so I can only go shopping at the weekend. Who do I encounter at the weekend - doing their shopping? Old people! Why? You're got all bloody week to get your bread and milk - do NOT go at the weekend. And then, to rub salt in the wound, what do I hear them saying? "Oh Harold, I hate this shop on a Saturday, it's always so busy!" Cretins! So, do I push past the old dear? Damn right! She should be at home - darning socks or listening to Desert Island Discs!

I have manners and good etiquette - if I fart in the clubhouse I also say sorry - unless I follow through...
