Really having trouble with swing tempo with my irons at the moment, I've just got no consistency, it seems fast and jerky, compared to my driver were it feels like I'm going in slow motion and I come through most of the time perfectly.

Any tips would be appreciated.

When I had the same problem I went to the range, slowed the swing down to a snails pace for loads of hits, then very gradually increased to where I wanted to be

The old trick, very effective, is to say a name on the backswing and downswing. Severiano Ballesteros fits the bill quite perfectly you will find. If you have finished your swing before you have finished the name then you are too quick. It really does help to slow you down.

And if you use "Nick Price" you'll have a swing as fast as his.

I have always thought that good tempo is a result of good ball striking. So when you are hitting it really well, you find you swing with a nice even gentle tempo because you know you are going to get it there easily and that the ball is coming out of the middle of the club.

On the days when the ball striking is poor, you find yourself thrashing and hitting at the ball.

So how do you fix it ?

For me I need to get back to good strikes. Small swings with a shortish iron, concentrating on really good impact positions really helps. Literally just chipping to start with and then working into fuller swings.

If this doesn't float your boat, the other method that works quite well is to make full swings but only hit the balls a short distance. So a full swing with a 7 iron that will only go a 100 yds.

This might sound silly, but when you stand behind your ball to pick the line, walk REALLY slowly to the ball when you're ready to hit.

If you do everything quickly it's very easy to let that spill over into your swing.

Good advice that, I do seem to rush up and just hit it.

3:1 ratio of backswing to downswing
Count 1,2,3 on the way back and 4 on the way through..
All the best swings are in this ratio. Nick Price(fast) and Ernie Els (slow) both have the same tempo.

Charley Hull thinks 'Strawberry' on the backswing and 'Mousse' on the downswing. Same principle - 3 syllables on backswing, one on the downswing.

Been practicing the 3-1 ratio in my back garden for the last hour, neighbours must think I'm mad 😂
Hopefully take it to the course tomorrow.
Is there any training aids for this sort of thing, something I could take offshore?

Thinking about 3.1 ratios etc is far too complex. just include a slight pause when you get to the top so you don't rush the down swing. Do this on every practice swing and it should bleed nicely into your real swing.
