An update on my mission to improve my clubhead speed and distance:

Starting Speed:
Driver 95mph
7-iron 70mph

I was determined to improve my club head speed and distance. After researching long and hard, studying techniques and lots of effort:

Current Speed (averages):
Driver: 110mph
7-iron: 88mph

This week on the course I ripped my first 300yard drive, straight down the middle, followed by another of 285 yards, straight. I made poor contact on a few others and pulled wide or straight but shorter. Minimum distance around 240 (no roll).

For the irons I was really struggling to improve. However, I found that KNOWING the speed was a great incentive, and by trying a few different things I've discovered a technique which really works for me (taking the right arm much wider). Far from affecting accuracy it's actually improved it. At the range today would normally be hitting 135 yards with the 7iron. Now up to 150 yards into a firm breeze using 90% balls.

For anyone else out there wanting more power, I would advise to ignore the naysayers. Don't accept that professionals are a special breed of super humans. It's a matter of technique and only a certain amount of physical conditioning.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I stand to be corrected, but it's not all about swing speed - it's about how efficient you are at transferring the energy generated by your swingspeed into actual ball speed

you can swing the club as fast as you like, but if you can't translate it into ball speed via a proper contact with the ball thro' the clubface, then all you've acheived is the increased risk of pulling something ;)

Impressive. 15mph increase in a week, eh?

So next week it'll be up to 125mph and 350 yards. By summer it should be 185 mph and 565 yards. Those par 5s are gonna be a dawdle.

:p

Gosh Timmie. That's really impressed me. Well on the way to being a scratch golfer now.

You're the man :D :D

Pity you only had one 300 yarder though. Still a bit of work needed there methinks.

What course do you play?

BTW. Why did you play 90% balls? That could explain your lack of length.

Guess Who's back?

Ding!

We've created a monster!

(Apologies Mr Mathers)

So what you are saying is you hit maybe 6 drives out of 18 reasonably well?

That's hardly the greatest advert for trying to smash it.

Although this is possibly the best piece of spam I've ever seen!

I really don't understand the almost universal disdain for what Tim's trying to achieve.

When we have a "What shot gives you greatest pleasure" thread, the big drive down the middle always features.
On the par 5 thread there are plenty of people saying laying up is boring.

Tim, well done. You've picked a part of your game to improve and have made good progress so far. I'd say keep going as long as you don't lose what accuracy you already have. I know you don't need telling that improving your short game will improve your scores as well, but it's up to you if/when you decide to do that.

The main thing is you're enjoying it.
