An update on my mission to improve my clubhead speed and distance:
Starting Speed:
Driver 95mph
7-iron 70mph
I was determined to improve my club head speed and distance. After researching long and hard, studying techniques and lots of effort:
Current Speed (averages):
Driver: 110mph
7-iron: 88mph
This week on the course I ripped my first 300yard drive, straight down the middle, followed by another of 285 yards, straight. I made poor contact on a few others and pulled wide or straight but shorter. Minimum distance around 240 (no roll).
For the irons I was really struggling to improve. However, I found that KNOWING the speed was a great incentive, and by trying a few different things I've discovered a technique which really works for me (taking the right arm much wider). Far from affecting accuracy it's actually improved it. At the range today would normally be hitting 135 yards with the 7iron. Now up to 150 yards into a firm breeze using 90% balls.
For anyone else out there wanting more power, I would advise to ignore the naysayers. Don't accept that professionals are a special breed of super humans. It's a matter of technique and only a certain amount of physical conditioning.
