After giving myself a hard time all last year about my putting, I was surprised to learn that it wasnt the cause for concern that i thought it to be.

Just spent an hour analysing all my rounds from last year and heres my averages off a handicap of 15.

Fairways hit- 81.12%
GIR- 35.69%
Putts per round- 35.02
Average score- 85

Found this to be very surprising as I always considered my iron play to be ok, but its pretty obvious that its the one area that needs most work.

How do the rest of you guys stats measure up and are they what you thought?

Have to say I'd question that stat as most tour players don't hit that in a season and especially given your handicap.

I'm off 14 and my fairways is only 46% which is still better than my handicap standard (according to Strokesaver 2) and my GIR is 25%. The main reason for the GIR is because I miss so many fairways and so not always in a position to go for the green in regulation

If you are hitting so many greens and fairways there must be something seriously wrong somewhere else in your game to be of 15. Out of interest how are you coming up with these figures. Do you use scoring software

Smange,

Here are my comments on your stats:

1. Fairways hit 81%:

Wow, thats's a great stat, No problems there. According to http://www.pgatour.com/r/stats, #1 in driving accuracy is Scott Verplank 81.52% so your stat is top drawer. Nice one.

2. GIR 35.69%

Tiger hits 80%, next pro on the list is 74% but your stat is still pretty good, equivalent to a high single figure handicapper. No worries here.

3. Putts/round 35.02: This is poor. Sorry, but your initial analysis was correct, you need to give yourself a hard time over your putting. Ok Padraig H averages less than 27/round (wow!) but 35+ is poor.

me personally would say that 35.02 was quite good, thats consistent 2 putts all the way round, all season. Gotta be happy with that. Dont all par scores account for two putts?

Amazing stat on the driving, Smange. Are you counting the ones that creep off the fairway by a yard or two? How did you remember all of these?

No offence but your putting is poor for the number of greens you hit. I have the same problem. You should be chipping and putting more by the looks of it.

I had 50 rounds recorded on Scoresaver last year.

Average score 81.38. Poor. Had 2 scores in the 90's
Fairways 56%. Could be better.
GIR 47%. Good
Putts 34.4 per round. Awful

Fairing better in the 8 rounds so far this year except the putting has gone up to 36.5. FFS !!!

Good to compare year on year, though. Quite revealing.

Yes homer i use an online software.
I thought my driving accuracy sounded a bit high but we have 5 par 3s on our course, so discounting them 81% works out at around hitting 10 out of 13 fairways, which when i think about it is about right for me as i dont tend to be too wild off the tee.
Stats are pretty accurate as i keep a good record as i go round, i have 2 scorecards on me at all times, one for the match and one for my personal records. On my personal card i mark the accuracy of my drive and how many putts i take. I always thought my accuracy off the tee was good but didnt realise how high it compares to pros(shame i dont have anywhere near the same length). Well, thats the driving cursed now.
Was relatively happy with my putting stat as it works out at par putting all the way round, but yes, room for improvement.

I've just checked an average of my stats for this year so far. 5 matches sampled (including an away course - Drumoig).

Driving Accuracy - 63.9%
GIR - 35.56%
Avg Putts - 33
Putts per GIR - 1.97
Avg Strokes - 83
Sand Saves - 12.5% (embarrasing)

3 good rounds in there and a couple of howlers.

Interesting...!
I keep stats on the way round (not that onerous really), and last year, playing off 13, scored:
Fairways Hit: 44.8%
GIR: 27.47%
Up & downs: 37.5%
Putts: 33.8
Putts/GIR: 2.088
Average score: 89

My short game is dreadful and has been worked on hard during the winter months....We'll see.

Sounds like to need to focus on your second shots and around the greens when you miss

From your putting stats and that you don't hit that many greens - I would say you hardly ever get up and down from round the green?

I'm off 14 and my stats for 14 games played this year,

Fairways hit 65.3%
GIR 32.58%
Ave Putts 31
Putts GIR 1.35
Ave Strokes 77

My short game is what saves my round most weeks.

Smange, Maybe U should be giving me shots . Brendy and I will have to keep a close eye on you, whenever we meet up.

Duely Noted ;)
For what its worth, no offence smange as I dont know how long you are off the tee, but short to med hitters I find are usually better at finding fairways than the longer hitters.

My stats are almost the same as yours, Smange. I average 9/14 fairways and about the same greens in reg. I'd guess I get up and down a bit better and my putting averages about 34 which is poor. Our fairways are pretty wide and greens pretty small.

I know I don't hole anywhere near enough and 3 putt too many. I played with a 6hcper last week and his putting inside 10 feet was a revelation. He never looked like he expected to mis and rarely did. That's difference bewteen the 13 I play off and single figures.

GIR- 35.69%

For a 15 h/cap these stats are brilliant. According to Scoresaver2,
f/ways hit should be min 42%
GIR 17%
Putts 34

So why 15h/cap? Is your short game from off the green letting you down? When green missed, are you taking too many to get on the green and still leaving a 2 put?

imo, hitting the GIR isn't so important as chipping to leave 1 putt. This and putting are the most important things on which to concentrate if you want to improve those scores.

Hey. But what do I know.

H/cap 15.1 and steady.

I'd say from those stats the obvious answer is like me he doesn't get up and down anywhere near enough. Only hitting 34% of greens and still averaging two putts says it all.

Fairways.....are you using your 5I mostly off the tee???? GREAT.
GIR......TERRIBLE.....go to the back of the class.
Putts.....not great, but at least it's under 36!!
Average score....bang on for 15, unless you are Par 72.

If you're managing 33% gir, you should play to around 12, give or take??? Shame to waste all those good drives.....

Downloaded SS2 and entered sundays game, my first 8 holes with the driver were pretty bad and took me a while to straighted it up. Seve would have been proud at the scrambling.

Fairways hit 57%
GIR %50
Putts per round 27.00
Sand Saves %0
Birdie Conversion "
Par Scrambles %67
Driving Distance 269 yds

Did I hear group buy anyone?

I tell you what, the stats are more interesting than most folks give credit for. So often, I hear the old chestnut "it's not how but how many".....well, I say....Oi, No!!!
For example, our ex-captain plays off 18. (He's a great guy, no brown-nosing). He hits about 4 or 5 greens a round and loses the ground made up on those pars with a few 3 putts and double or two. I heard some member saying he was a "rubbish" golfer, but I disagree. I never saw him slice the hell out of a ball, or top a shot, or dunk a 100 yarder in the lake, or thin/shank a wedge, or even fart out of place. He just steps up, hits it pretty good, hits it again, misses the green a tad, chips on and 2 putts. OK, so if he could improve the ratio of chip and putt saves, but, hey, steady is as steady does. He's not a bad golfer.

Some days, I step onto the course and can't buy a "straight" par. Other days I might hit 9 greens and break 80....

Don't know why I wanted to say this, and what relevance this has to the thread, but for me, the stats are often really useful, and actually reveal the truth behind the player.
