Stupid dress codes

Sorry to dredge up the dress code issue again but I'm sick of buying 'daring' golf apparel like turtle neck polos and trainer style shoes and then worrying that I'm not wearing the right clothes and I'll be ejected from the course. Hello this is 2007 not 1907 though judging by the egg-stained moth eaten pringles worn with nasty polyester slacks worn 2 inches above the ankle seen on my local course some people are clearly under this delusion.

I think a simple code like banning denims, shell suits and casual t-shirts would be okay. I don't want to see dress codes abolished as I've played on some rough muni's and it's not a pretty sight but it does need to be brought up to date. If some people want to wear knee socks that's their issue but I don't want to look like an old fart, I want to enjoy wearing all the cool new golf clothes and trendy shoes without feeling like I'm back at school and it's uniform inspection. I think if something is a proper golf label then it's okay to wear.

This topic has come up once again and my view is simple.

I bet each and every fuddy duddy on the committee use new titanium 460 drivers and sticks like $h1te pro v1's. Are they keeping with nostalgia and tradition? Are they still using Persimon drivers and hickory shafts ????

NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So why are they fighting tooth and nail trying to stifle peoples individuality when it comes to dress sense. I believe that if the manufacturers make it and Pro's wear it then so should we.

It is Golf EVOLUTION and the dinosaurs will become extinct soon.

My proposal is that at your naxt AGM I suggest a group of young men vote each other onto the committee thus giving golf in the 21st century a voice for the future.

Lets fight back and ban electric trolleys and gold buggies (this would keep the bed wetters at home or at least in the clubhouse) they never used them back in the day

Theres nothing worse than see someone playing in a 20 year jumper, an old pair of trousers faded from the wash or so old that the stains of the last 15 years are embedded in the fabric.

however, i also feel some of the modern golf gear is not suited to the overweight unfit 50 year olds. Skin tight turtle necks are not for all.

in other words a sensible dress code for all.

I think some of the older members at some clubs enjoy enforcing their version of the dress code more than the golf itself!

sometimes its a race to be the first to advise someone of their error (e.g. wearing a wind proof jumper in the clubhouse. imagine that!)

You're right par_par_par_treble - it does give the old crones something to do when they aren't terrorising the juniors 'cos it irritates them that they can hit the ball further. They would have a heart attack if they witnessed what I saw driving on the by-pass near Ayr a couple of weeks ago when we had the freak heat wave. Lads playing golf with NO POLO SHIRTS ON.

I'm all in favour of the new turtle necked golf shirts etc. as worn by Tiger and many others, but dress codes are the perogative of the individual Club Committees, and presumably you all knew about and accepted the dress code when you joined your Club. Equally so, if you visit another Club and pay a green fee, you have to accept their code. I agree with madandra, if you want to change it you have to get elected onto the committee and work from there.

I agree with the posts...clubs do need to reflect changing fashions, designs and the latest developments. I for one, do like to put on my golfing trousers and polo shirts (I have several and they are all clean!) as it puts me into a "golfing frame of mind". It may not show in my scores, but I feel better, which in turn helps me play better. Certainly at my club where there is a continued drive to recruit new members, certain "traditional" rules such as shirt and tie in the club house have been relaxed.

Does this course have a dress code or not?

1. Dress. Belton Park Golf Club has no strong dress rules, but have advised the following:

a. The wearing of denim type clothing and collarless shirts is strictly forbidden both on the golf course and in the clubhouse.

b. The wearing of “athletic footwear” is prohibited in the clubhouse.

c. Tailored shorts along with knee length socks may be worn on the course at anytime and in the Clubhouse until 7.30pm.

d. Mobile phones are not tolerated anywhere on the course or in the clubhouse.

e. After 7.30pm, Jackets and Ties are to be worn in the Dining Room.

That is a dress code in the making!

The collarless shirts part is a bit of a grey area - does that mean you can't wear the tiger style shirts?

I'm up for the no athletic footwear - combining white Nike's with a smart navy pair of chino's is cringe worthy, and as for the socks - just don't bother with shorts.
