We had a Texas scramble today, one of the scorecards had the wrong players name on, although the handicap of the actual player was the one marked on the scorecard.

It was decide to allow the score, as we couldn't find anything about names being incorrect only handicaps.

Have any of our resident experts any comments about this?

As Scrambles are, largely, fun games and flirt with some of the Rules they're not considered "proper" so a mistake like that shouldn't be one to worry about in my opinion.

For formats covered by the RoG, it is the responsibility of the committee to issue a scorecard containing the date and the competitors name(s). Though the note to rule 33-5 states that the committee may request that the player completes this information there is no penalty for them not doing so.

In devising the rules for a scramble, I suggest an early one should be

Insofar as the format allows, the Rules of Golf will apply.

That covers many situations, including scorecards.

With this type of comp becoming more and more popular, Its about time rules were standardised.

Id Agree totally.

Theres a 'rule' we all adhere to, whereby the person who's shot you used has to play first everytime, which is fair enough on the fairway, but on the green I cant see a 'breach' with players putting in any order, because he may be a better putter that you'd rather have a look first. anyone agree?

Why does it matter who plays first? Everyone plays their shot and you choose the best and for a putter that means the one that goes in the hole.

please read the question as that's exactly what I'm asking - why does it matter who goes first on the green? every team always plays that the person who hit the shot goes first, its sort of an unwritten rule but why?

In our case, it's a written rule. I'd hesitate to offer any rationale for it, but to have it means that every team plays to the same requirement and if you have it, it is certainly simpler to leave it as the requirement on the putting green. Adding in exceptions to rules can add to confusion.

Our standard scramble rules decree that the player whose ball is selected plays the ball as it lies and the others play from within 6 inches of the marked spot, I can see no reason why that would be changed when the chosen ball lies on the green. That would require an additional rule which seems unnecessary.

After the selected players ball has been played .Some clubs say place within 6 inches, some say within 2 score card length, some say drop within a club length on the fairway and in the rough not nearer the hole.
On the green I prefer to leave the best putter to putt last if possible, as long as we all remember 14/2b [ i think ] .:smirk:

I always find it useful that the line of putt doesn't extend beyond the hole :D

that's why I asked - we always play the person who hit the shot plays first when on both green & fairway, but if he's the best putter leaving him to go last could be an advantage. a 4 man scramble is often won by the odd point .1 of a shot so just holing one extra can make a big difference. if its on the fairway then no arguments, but on the green its lifted & cleaned & replaced by the first player and pretty much every person plays from the same exact spot anyway but until there's an 'official' rule for scrambles there's no problem, it was just a query

Thats why i said " if possible".

Do clubs really stipulate 14-2b must be adhered to in scrambles? Certainly don't at ours. TBH half the field would ignore it anyway and there would be some pretty inconsistent interpretations of "close to the line" so I don't really see how it could be enforced fairly anyway. Seems to be very pedantic in what is obviously just a fun comp. Watching the line of the first putts is part of the fun IMHO.......and doesn't actually help that much from my experience!!

At ours it is, we have a A4 printed sheet giving all the comp rules / conditions specifically quoting rule 14/2b, on display at the starters desk .

So what other rules do you choose to ignore, any rule violation could not be enforced in scrambles, it is up to players own conscience.
