A new ‘Complex’ is to open in June after being developed from scratch for the past 5 or so years, less than 3 miles from my house.
Naturally I have been keeping my eye on the progress for some years and was delighted when I got a call to invite me into the marketing suite to inform me of their prices now the course and clubhouse have an official opening date (1st June).
So the bloke goes through the marketing bit (Range, bunker practice area, putting green, par 3 course – all open now / gym, restaurant, health suite, spa etc.) explains to me it is going to be the whole she-bang, proper country club, I tell him the salesman thing doesn’t work on my I just want to know how much for 5 day / 7 day, if there is pay and play option, what the green fee will be, joining fee etc.
Salesman - “No†he says - £80 a month for the membership (includes all of the above)
Me – “What about just golf, I don’t want gym membership.â€
Salesman - “We only do one type of membership - where you get everythingâ€
Me - “What if the Mrs wants to go just the gym, does she have to pay for the golf too?â€
Salesman – “No she can pay £40 a month for just gymâ€
Me – “But I can’t pay £40 a month for just golf?â€
Salesman – “No if you want golf you have to pay for everythingâ€
So there is either £40 gym membership or £80 everything membership.
I left bamboozled. Has anyone else experience this one membership for all theory? It’s not the amount per month I’m raising concern about, it’s the lack of other options that surprised me.
Or it may just be a bold sales strategy to see how it goes before they are fully up and running, and may consider reviewing this at a later day?
