From previous threads i see that quite a few of you guys use statistic recording software to see what you are doing right and wrong.

I have a few questions. How many of you find them useful? What one would you recommend? How much do they cost?

Thanks

Without doubt (and I've tried the Todays Golfer software and bought golfscore recorder on a CD) the best software on the market at the moment is Scoresaver 2 http://www.scoresaver.co.uk/

It is a one off charge of £40 but it has more statistics than you probably need and is very easy to use. They have just introduced their latest update so if you buy now you will have the latest all singing version.

I know a fair number of the guys on here all use it and all say the same as me that it is brilliant. I have made my views known to the company and told them to try and speak to GM and get their programme put forward for a readers test and believe that is in hand.

I know £40 seems steep especially with free software to the download out there but this really is comprehensive. Even upgrading to the latest version of the software took only a few minutes.

Give it a go it comes with the Homer Simpson seal of approval

All i use at the moment is the handicap tracker on the 'todaysgolfer' website. its free and has reasonable features, stats, etc. depend how much detail you want.

I have heard very good things about the software that Homer has recommended above, more stats than you can shake a stick at!

I strongly suggest getting it. It has helped my game tremendously by highlighting problem areas. YOu can also record your practice session and see what you have been working on historically (and make notes on how it went), and record lesson details so you needn't forget what the pro said.

At £40 it is only the cost of a night out and will do wonders for your game

Problem with Scoresaver (for me) is that they do not do a mobile version and I cannot be asked to record on paper and then re-record on PC (soooo 20th century)
I am about to order intelligolf which does everything SS does on the move and gives gps distances etc

As you might have guessed from my user name, I have been involved in the development of Scoresaver since 1997. Let me first assure you that I am not here to mercilessly plug our products (lots of our happy customers seem to do that for us...)

Anyway, I don't think I am breaching any rules by reprinting a discount promo code for Scoresaver 2 which first appeared in (paid for) adverts in the GM Magazine last summer. The promo code is GMON76 and gives you a £5 discount. Before deciding if it is worth £35, you can try Scoresaver 2 free of charge and without obligation for 30 days. The £35 is a one-off payment which allows you to use Scoresaver 2 forever and includes free upgrades until at least 2010. Any questions, just PM me here or through our website.

btw, the latest version includes a quick 'n' dirty "Copy To Clipboard" function which allows you to paste a snapshot of you game into forum posts: see below.

Key stats for Andy Richmond (Hcap: 12)

Fairways Hit: 55% (Hcap Std: 9)
Greens In Reg: 34% (Hcap Std: 9)
Putts Per Round: 33.01 (Hcap Std: 15)
Sand Saves: 10% (Hcap Std: 18)
Birdie Conversion: 14% (Hcap Std: 14)
Par Scrambles: 22% (Hcap Std: 13)
Driving Distance: 260 (Hcap Std: 3)
Penalties Per Round: 1.90 (Hcap Std: 19)

I use Intelligolf, big advantage is that it's downloaded onto my pocket pc phone. So I can use it as my scorecard and review certain stats whilst on the course. Then when I get home I just sync the whole thing onto the PC and voila, graphs an' everything. Only thing with it is is that to use it fully you will need to record every shot you take, ie. which club you use, fairway bound, left, right, distance etc. All I use is the number of shots taken and the number of putts.

I actually keep two versions going, one for gross scores, which I have on the pocket pc, and one for net scores. Will also do stableford scoring, but I've not worked out quite how all that happens.

Hi Homer, it is on my list of 'to buys'. Just about to move into my first house so money is rarer than a satisfied Northern Rock Customer (sorry had to nick it off you mate ;))

I normally write my score card up, then input it onto my excel spreadsheet, then add it to my online handicapper tracker (yes I have more time than sense)

How’s the form at the moment Homer, improving I hope? My clubs came close to a swim in the river Mersey on Sunday...

...unless you're a Mac user in which case it's as useless as a chocolate teapot

To be fair you're probably not the person who made that decision (and if you know him - give 'im a quick knee in the soft parts from me) but if you put your head above the parapet etc. :p

Fair point billyg. Nowadays Macs are much more prevalent than they were even a few years ago. Some recent development (and all of our new website) was done on a Mac running VMWare Fusion supporting Windows XP. SS2 and just about every other Windows program runs great on the Mac with VMWare running XP.

I do think that Macs will take more and more of Microsoft's market share now that Vista is upon us. MS spent $5,000,000,000 on Vista and whilst it has some advantages, XP is still our preferred platform. Now that Apple have iPod, iPhone etc, people are much more likely to consider buying an iComputer.

But... sorry, we have no short term plans for a native Mac version.

Not having a pop ss....well perhaps a little one. I got into Macs through a mate and have never owned a pc. I typrically get 6 years out one before I even think of upgrading and the Mac OS makes Microsoft GUI's look like an accounting programme from the 1980's.

Whatever little ram hungry inovation Gates comes up with Jobs did it five years ago.

Who invented the mouse - Apple

Who invented the GUI- Apple

Who invented the PDA- Apple

Who invented the click wheel- Apple

Who invented the mass market mp3 player - Apple

Who invented Quicktime - Apple

yada yada yada etc.

If Apple started making golf clubs i'd buy 'em blind

The minor (and shrinking) inconvenience of not being able to use a few bits of software is a blip.

Sure it's a great bit of software you're sellin' but i'll never know as i'd rather eat my own stools than have a pc in this house

Listen guys SS2 has come on here with a promo and inviting you to trial the software for 30 days. The flaws re Mac users were well documented when we discussed scoring software several weeks ago.

For those who complain about writing the stuff down, there is a simple cut-out you can use which slips inside your scorecard. It is just a case of marking of the relevant bit (Fairway hit, GIR, sand save, number of putts) at the same time as marking your card. Seems a lot simpler than having to plug into your mobile every hole.

If you are looking for some software to track your game, and it really does help to know your flaws, at least trail this one and use the discount code. I know for a fact that SS2 has only made it available tonight for forum users.

Seems to me that all you are really doing is recording your score with number of putts taken. I can just imagine the looks from fellow golfers if I took a mobile phone out onto the course and got it out after every shot.....

Last year I was using Golf Stats Manager and in the end it was becoming a right pain. To use it properly I had to make a note of every club I used and how far I had hit it, had to rate the quality of strike, etc etc. A couple of good practice sessions should give you better feedback on how well you hit various clubs.

Changed to Scoresaver - what a difference. Enter a blank scorecard for your course (or other course you are playing) and print off as many scorecards as you want with "tick boxes" to record on course fairways hit/missed/left/right, GIR/missed, putts, sand saves etc. It takes only a couple of minutes to record the info into the software.

It does what is says on the tin and helps highlight strong/ week areas of your game. An added bonus imo is that on the course you are aware of how the result of the next shot will affect your stats and helps add that little bit of concentration.

Usual disclaimers apply.........

I've just downloaded trial version, and I'll see how I get on. Tick boxes sound easy. But as already mentioned I don't record all the other stuff on the phone - that would be a bit geeky! What I do like about Intelligolf are the charts, as it does graphically show trends particularly well. Does SS2 do this?

SS2 has a huge choice of graphs to plot your performance and there is a very good selection process where you can refine your selections right down (even shows performance on each individual hole either month by month, over a season etc).

It tells you how you are performing in relation to your handicap. If you have lessons there are charts you can print and give to your pro so he can refine lessons around weak spots.

You can record lessons and write what you were told so you have a permanent reminder. You can record practice sessions so you can see what you were working on and how much time you spent on each part of your game.

You can even record match results against other players so you can see how you got on.

For the discounted price of £35 (seee discount code on this thread) I think it overs more than any other software out there. Just download the trial and see for yourself

Been playing with it for the last 15 minutes. All of my gross scores are on the laptop, which is at work. I'll enter in the gross score and putts taken tomorrow night and I'll put the results up (on this topic post) for all to have a laugh at!

Joking aside perhaps one of you helpful types will tell me what it all means as far as my game goes!

PS. Sorted my h'cap question. The club came back to me with 24, based on 3 rounds of the more difficult of the two courses, (no banditory involved). I'm not un-happy with it, but the boss is already knocking at least 2 off for the comp.
