SPOTY

As, some may argue, was Billy Monger's?

You do understand the award he was given yes ?

As for the calls for Fury - surely there are other boxers ahead that could have been nominated- guys that are actually World Champions

Fury's the Lineal HW champion and never lost his belts. He was incredibly depressed and on the brink of suicide before managing to overcome his issues, lose a heck of a lot of weight, get back fighting fit with the year culminating in one of the best HW fights for years. A fight which ended with Fury being almost KO'd cold before getting himself up off the mat and dominating the rest of the round. That round alone perfectly tells Furys story, he had an incredible year and to not even be nominated is a joke. This award is meant to take into account "impact within and beyond the sport or sporting achievement in question", well I don't think anyone created more impact with their story via their sporting achievement than Tyson Fury in 2018. He has become a prominent advocate for mental health, donated his entire £8m purse to the homeless, and put on one of the most incredible fights against one of the scariest punchers of all-time. I thought he was a shoe-in.

Fury will never win a popularity contest because of some of the vile stuff he has spouted in the past, because of that he is always going to struggle to get votes.
You struggle to see past combat sports, there are loads of sports with much more engaging and worthwhile characters.

Denis Pugh

Surely that should be Dave Alred as Molinari has had Dennis Pugh as his swing coach for a number of years.

This truly stellar year for Frankie has come after Alred became his performance coach.

And that's your opinion, just as it is mine that the characters in combat sports are worthy of recognition when it comes to awards like this. We're not all going to agree, that's the nature of an award where the nominations come from all sports.

I'm not saying that combat sport people are not worthy of being included, I'm saying because of his history that Fury isn't worthy. There are people like AJ who is very engaging and comes across very well, if he unites the heavyweight division next year then he would be a serious contender for SPOTY 2019.

Used to love it back in the day - can't be bothered with watching it these days. Switched over to it after watching news headlines at 7pm - but the arena format is a total turn-off for me - and so switched back after seeing who was short-listed. I called GW as my fave - so pleased he won - out of the monumental cycling shadows of Wiggins and Froome.

So Fury's not worthy because of his past, but AJ gets a free pass despite having a criminal history for intent to deal drugs and earlier guilty charge for "fighting and other crazy stuff"? What if Fury unites the Heavyweight division next year by beating Wilder and AJ? Still not worthy?

I wasn't aware of AJ's past so fair point, you win. I'll vote for Fury next year (y)

if he does that he'll be worthy. But he hasn't done that this year. Hence why he hadn't been nominated!

Above is the list of the current World Champions and I don’t see this “linear” champ or Furys name in the list of World Champs.

Fury did well to come back and get a draw - he still didn’t win and claiming a fight is “one of the best HW fight in years” and “one of the most incredible fights “ - it’s all a little over the top for a draw and it’s all a touch bias. If Fury had actually won they he might have got in the top 6

Spelling mistake - Fury is the "Lineal" Heavyweight Champion. Not a belt per-se but is the champion if you take the history of Heavyweight boxing back to its inception in 1885. He earned that title after beating Klitschko and hasn't been beaten since, and he never lost the titles he won by beating Klitschko either.

It might be over the top but I don't see how it's bias, it's an opinion based on watching the fight and being a fan of boxing. It was a great back and forth Boxing match between two great heavyweight boxers, did you watch the fight?

It’s just a saying though isn’t it and it was something he earned a couple years back not in 2018 - he has no belts , he faced one tough opponent and it was a draw. He isn’t a world champion - AJ , Smith , Warrington - three current unbeaten World Champions I believe - all three ahead of Fury

It was very much over the top and it becomes bias because you rate Fury and always have done so you will go over the top.

Fury isn’t even the British Boxer of the year , there is one British Heavyweight World Champion and it isn’t him - regardless of what he has had in his personal life as a sporting achievement I suspect it’s only on the radar of Fury fans

Don't believe boxing currently has the right image to garner much support from the 'grey vote'.... Which is where much support for public votes comes from...

For a phone vote, which I imagine this is (don't watch the programme so don't know), I doubt that the typical voter is much older than 45.

I suspect boxing suffers more than some other sports from lack of exposure on terrestrial television.

It's exposure on terrestrial TV will be mostly the weigh ins... Which might be great for putting bums on seats... But not so great for raising the sports profile...

It is, but it is a widely used and respected title in boxing, and if you were a fan of the sport you'd know that. It's not as valuable as an actual belt, but that doesn't mean it's irrelevant.

What are you on about? I was a big detractor of Fury when he was nominated for SPOTY in 2015 for the things he was saying at the time and before hand and have become a fan of his only very recently.

Yes I do and I think he was a very worthy winner. I think he's an amazing young man and a fabulous talent, especially considering what he's gone through.
I merely suggested that some people, cynical people, may not appreciate his winning of the award.
