sports personality of the year

Re: Sports personality of the year

Rory may have a chance.
It's tricky to pick between all the Olympic Heroes - they almost all deserve it. It might split the vote and those who didn't get off on the Olympics - and there were plenty - may vote for Rors...

If personality has anything to do with it, then that young lady boxer from Leeds,(Nicola Adams?) gets my vote.
I thought she was a breath of fresh air, and that Ali shuffle was pure class..
As happens every year, this nonsense gets trotted out, and every year it's pointed out it's an award for sporting achievement, that the beeb saddled from day one with a total misnomer.

Straight fight between Wiggins and Murray.

Has to be Wiggins for me. An amazing achievement to win the TdF (as well as several other prestigious races), along with an Olympic gold. He has also gone some way to cleaning up a severely tainted sport. It also helps that he lives up the road from me and drinks in the same pub on occasion. Oh, and contrary to opinion, it is rumoured that he is a very funny guy when you get to know him, he just doesn't like attention from the media..

Agree with that, I'm full of respect for his achievements, but I'm not a band wagon jumper in terms of thinking he is a top bloke. Always found him to be lacking in anything close to personality or manners.

If you get a chance try and watch the docu that was on the other week - Bradley Wiggins : A year in yellow

That will give you an insight.

It was a great watch.

I kind of love Brad, in a manly way of course.

I completely take on board that SPOTY does not need to have a personality, but in Brad's case he does. You can see that, whilst he understands he has to say the right thing at times, he also has a mind of his own and is not afraid to speak his mind. Contrast that with the banalities that come out of Tiger Wood's mouth. And Brad's very grounded, he knows it's just sport and there's no need to think it's a matter of life or death, and he's quite humble in a way and does not seem to have the sense of entitlement that is prevalent in a lot of professional sports people nowadays. Especially most footballers and managers.

11 Olympians that inspired a nation, plus a young lad that plays golf..

Think I know which way the UK populace will vote.

Wiggans is the odds on bookies favourite.........still

I have lost track of the awards as I have not watched it for a few years. Is there a team award still? If so Ryder Cup Team.
Individual award to Andy or Brad although I would love to see Ben whathisname get it.

Andy or Brad for SPOTY (it's a toss up - both brill and almost identical achievements this year). Ben Ainsle is a different kettle of fish - he should get a 'Sporting lifetime achievement award' for what he has achieved over the last 20yrs or however long it is he's been top of the world. Greater recognition than 'mere' SPOTY and certainly easily merited when compared with the likes of a Premiership footballer who previously won.

Your entitled to your view, and i'am entitled to mine. I'am also entitled to my vote like every one else.
Like you say the award is for sporting achievement, so do you vote for someone who has the backing and support of unlimited funds in professional sport. Or in an Olympic year, embrace the ideal of amateurism and vote for someone who despite having to work for a living until recently, still managed to reach the pinnacle of their sport.
Whose achievement is greater ? I know were my vote is going.
