As above,

Been toying with a idea of getting myself a (gap) wedge, think is i am not sure i need one..

Same as most as i have a PW and SW.. Any shots from 70 Yards in i tend to try and control a PW or a 9 iron, but as most will know this is hard to master the correct weight and personnaly i feel this is a part of my game i could improve on alot.

Thing is i am not sure about all this bounce and what deg to get etc, so wondering does anyone here have any advise for me?

I currently also have a 60deg wilson (hand me down) wedge ( I carry with me sometimes) which is ok and i can hit when in a fairly good ly, but I would be interested in getting myself something new and shinny for this season which i could use every round.

thanks for any help or advise in advance !!

Looking at your club makeup i would suggest a 54 degree wedge as it would sit in nicely between your 60 and pitching wedge,as for the bounce the tighter your fairways the lower the bounce needed probably 4 or 6,if your fairways are softer you would need a higher bounce 8-12,IMO

You COULD spend £75 on a Ping 52 wedge which would match the rest of your set, or.............
5 x lessons on how to control the wedges you've got.
I know what I think would be more fun and more rewarding.
Learn the art of the short game rather than trying to buy it

5X Lessons on how to control the wedges youve got,is that buying the art not learning it,seems a bit long winded,at least buying a new wedge hes got something to show for his money.

I don't know the lofts on your irons (PW) but I find modern lofts have made a PW less of a wedge and more of an iron.
I use a 52 degree wedge with a 56 and 47 either side. I wouldn't be without it.
Years ago, I'd simply have invented something with a PW, but t.b.h. I'd rather hit a full 52 than a 3/4 something else.
It gets me out of trouble quite a bit when I have 90-100 yards and maybe (just maybe) I might have the good fortune to hit the exact distance and get down in two.
Just my pennies worth.

I have to say my 60 degree wedge is a awkward customer. It can save me some shots and can be a godesend in the summer with firmer greens and heavier greenside rough but I tend to find in wetter conditions it costs more shots than its worth. I like my PW, 52 and 58 set up as I can play enough shots with those and with the 52 and 58 in particualr I'm pretty covered from 80 yards and in without having to manufacturer anything or worry too much on swing length or speed.

I think a good short game is vital and would advocate a couple of lessons (sorry Bob but I think 5 is OTT) and get a basic pitch stroke sorted and then work on some finesse (high, low, pitch and spin, pitcha nd release etc

Homer, I wasn't seriously suggesting hendy actually has 5 lessons on his wedges, I was simply pointing out that for the price of a new wedge he'd be spending the equivalent of 5x 1/2 hour lessons.
He could get a 1/2 lesson on putting, chipping, bunkers and an hour on pitching and the clockface drill.

:)

or do it the RG way. Buy the wedge off the used rack and spend the saved money on two wedge lessons.

Oddly, my SW and PW are back to normal....but my GW is still causing me trouble.

I did notice the grip is all shiny and doesn't feel right in my hands.....the price of buying a used club I guess.

PS. If I get it re-gripped, should I have it lengthened by 1/2" (as my irons) and if so, would it need a little tap to adjust the lie....or would it just be 0.5 degree or something?

Ask your mars bar seller, he'll do the whole job for about £5

I agree with bob on this thread.

If the op is to get a new wedge yes it will be nice and shiny and a new toy to play with but if he is struggling already with his current wedges then he will more than likely struggle with this one. IMO he should take a couple of lessons sort himself out a repetitive swing and then if he feels the need for a gap wedge sure go for it.

No point in trying to buy any aspect of the game...

Hope that makes sense ;)

Fwiw, my GW has been the second most used club in the bag after the putter. The strength of PWs has made it a necessity between the PW and SW. Having said that, I've spent quite alot of time practicing with it. So in answer to the OP. A bit of both.

I agree with this. You rarely see me hitting small pitches with a "pitching" wedge any longer. If I'm greenside and want to get the ball up but don't need a SW loft, this is the club that gets the call.

Thanks for all the info and advise guys, also viscount17 for taken the time to find the spec of my irons.

I think with some good practice I may be able to work on 70 yards in with my PW..

Although i still feel if i had something like one of them vokey style blade wedges it would help me around the green a fair bit.. My thinking for this would be where i have a tight ly and need to get the ball up and down without to much run..

Also should have added that i have 50 quid in the club account (prize money) that i was going to use to get something for the bag..
