How many wedges

At this time I have a lot of bounce on my wedges....54+58 have 12 and my 64 has 10. My old Ping 60 had 6 which was easier for me to pick off tight lies...and in the winter off bare mud lies. When it comes time to replace the 64 I'll be looking at 6 or 8. I wouldn't mind the 54+58 with a little less than 12 as well.

Where have most people been going for used fairway woods online?...maybe an old Ping 425 7w or something. Really thinking about pushing my 11w out of the bag and lofting my 9w up as much as I can and putting a 7w inbetween the 5w + 9w.
Jeez.. does the ball not just pop up and hit you on the chin?

Nope.....although it would have to get past my gut before it got to my chin.

To me it is the ol' this is the right way to play golf attitude.
-People are told not to try a 64 wedge because they don't need them and they are risky to use.....I LOVE the club. But if you don't have a fairly consistent swing...yes, it's dangerous.
-If you have small hands only use standard or smaller grips....I use oversize with at least 5 tapes under the grip....love it.
-Don't use the 10 finger grip, that's for bad golfers......I switched a few years ago and playing my best golf.
-Nobody uses an 11w.....well, I do and it's nice. And a 9w.
-Currently no "regular irons" in my bag at all (not counting wedges..and one of those is a hybrid)
-I also leave the flag in....works better for me, others obviously disagree.

I keep experimenting....if it works for me I keep doing it.

My bag is always in flux because I'm obviously a very unstable individual,
but if you count a PW and GW that match the numbered irons,
I think that I presently have four.

Titleist GT 2___11° driver (HZRDUS Smoke Red RDX 70R)
Titleist GT 2___16.5° 4-wood (HZRDUS Smoke Red RDX 70R)
Callaway Ai Smoke Heavenwood___20° utility wood (HZRDUS Smoke Red RDX 70R)
Titleist U505___20º driving iron (UST Recoil 95-R)
Titleist T Series Blended___5-GW (UST Recoil 95-R)
Titleist SM10-T Grind___58-04 wedge (UST Recoil 95-R)
Cleveland Smart Sole Full Face___64° sand iron (UST Recoil 95-R)
Tad Moore Chicopee___putter
Titleist Pro V1x___ball

What's that? Light? Heavy? Average?

I don't understand folks who have a lot of wedges (not talking about pro's). Placing forward or back in the stance, opening the face, changing the swing from a iron type swing to a putting stroke - there's so much you can do with even 1 wedge. So I only rock two: A Chipper (Cleveland smart sole 42) and SW (Cleveland smart sole 58). Have even dropped the pitching wedge. Because I love the smart soles so much, I might get the Gap wedge (50) just to play around with.

So much to unpick here. We'll gloss over the "so much you can do with a wedge" before stating you have the least versatile wedge possible (a chipper).

Anyway, I don't know what you consider a lot of wedges. But having different lofts and bounces means you can execute different shots without having to change your swing very much. For those of us who aren't exceptional players.

A lot of wedges is: Pitching wedge, Gap wedge, Sand Wedge, Lob Wedge. So, four. I find the chipper extremely versatile. Use it from shots from 110 yds and in, and by moving it forward or back in my stance I do different types of chips and pitches from close in. It's no good in bunkers though...😅

Maybe if you had more wedges you wouldn't have to. What do you hit from 100 yards if there's a bunker or lake in front of the green?

Personally, I wouldn't call the Cleveland a chipper in the purest sense. It is a wedge. In my eyes, a chipper is a putter with loft and certainly not to be used for shots of 110 yards!

I have an old Ram chipper in the garage. It's like a big mallet putter but with 40° loft. I only ever used it around the fringe of the green.
A friend has one of the Ping chippers, although he's stopped using it. It was like an 8-iron but with a short shaft, loads of bounce and a very upright lie. He was deadly with it from about 100 yards in. Don't know why he stopped using it.

Maybe he realised he could just use his 8 iron?

I had been carrying 4 wedges until about 6 months ago....now 5. Can't really count my PW so much since it is a hybrid. Then 50-54-58-64. Standard full-ish swings on each club is 80-70-63-50. No idea why I get a weird distance with my 58. Very little need to adjust my swing very much. Consistency of swing is what I am after......yes, I can open the club etc but I try to only do those kinds of things if I NEED them.

I've gone with PW(46), 50 , 56
Very happy with this set up. Having 56 as highest loft has been a brilliant decision, think a lot of people should consider it. Consistency has been way better since getting rid of anything higher lofted

Yeah, I see your point. I view it as a high lofted utility club. To be honest, I had to lenghten the club to 36 inches, because it was so short that I couldn't do anything with it. Supposedly it's the same length as a putter, but my putter is 36 inch as well..

Since I trimmed down the bag for winter carrying I'm going from 8 or 9 iron to 52° and 56°.
The 52° is for everything inside 110 yards.
56° is just for bunkers, little flops out of thick grass around greens or going over bunkers.
As a result, my short game is better now than it was during the summer with a pitching wedge and an occasional 60° in the bag.

I don't overly consider my stock PW as a pitch. It's 41 degree. So old school 9 iron

My gap is 48 so old school pitch

Then I have a 54 and a 60

I used the 54 for the majority of things under 50 yards

I only pull the 60 if it's green side bunker, or need to go quickly up and over something

My OCD in all aspects of life is leading my current wedge choice - there you go, I said it!

My last set iron is 48 degrees and I am obsessed with gapping (both numbered loft and actual distance), so first choice is 52/56/60.

The issue is, I am still experimenting with 5 iron/5 hybrid/7 wood, so currently only have room for 54/58.

I 100% play better around the green with three, but need to get to that green, so once I have decided at the top end, I should be able to settle with the three.

More like Old School 8.

Biggest selling irons of all time are the 1980s Ping Eye2.
8 - 40°
9 - 45°
PW - 50°

PW is 45, then 51 and 56 S18 wedges.

PW is for around 125y full, moderate swing for less.

51 for 105y full, moderating swing for less and also gets used for chips around the green.

56 gets me anywhere from 90y and in plus opening face to differing degrees for any flop type shots or greenside bunkers.

I used to be a 2 wedge guy and was pretty settled on 52/58, but that was when stock wedges were 48 ish in loft. This normally meant 4-Pw in stock plus 52/58 ( 9 irons in total)

As sets have progressed the lofts have change and more wedges need adding, but the total irons remains the same 5-Pw stock plus 48/52/58.

20 years down the line sets will start at 6i but you’ll be carrying 42/48/52/58… but still 9 irons.

100%

My last set of irons were titliest 716 ap1, the 5 iron was 25 degree however I used to also carry 3 hybrids 19 , 21 , 24 degree so never carried the 5 iron

Now my mizuno jpx 925 the 6 iron is 25 degree, so still carry 6-gw like I did before but I've dropped to 2 hybrids

Before I had 15 clubs in my house now I only have 13.. 19 and 22 degree hybrids make up the set
