Yes, there seems to be a bit of conformity with a few manufacturers and their "players irons" like Callaway Apex MB, Mizuno Pro 241, Taylormade P 7MB and Titleist T 100.

A 21° 3-iron to a 46° PW. Or thereabouts.

For those types of clubs, I think manufacturers might be scared of deviating from this in case they lose customers/sales.

But for sets aimed at higher handicaps, stronger and stronger lofts and promises of more distance, seems to increase sales.
And the diversification of product - set of a few irons, some hybrids and a "set" of wedges - increases revenue far more than a just a set of irons that includes two wedges.

3……

Pw is 46 degrees

AW is 51 degrees

SW is 57 degrees

3 different yardages with each and the 57 works nicely out of bunkers. They’re the wedges that came with my irons , Srixon ZX 7 MK 2. The AW and SW are blades , where as the 4-PW have a muscle back/ cavity type look.

I was watching the f0rebr0thers on Youtube and one of them said something along the lines of, "I think this is a bit much for my 48, so I'm going to hit a pitching wedge," and I had to wind it back to make sure I'd heard it properly! My pitching wedge is 47 degrees and I'm sure I'm going to get a certain feathered member or our resident Star Trek enthusiast along soon to tell me that even that's strong.

I looked up the clubs these guys used and the PW is 42 degrees, which is just insane. No wonder they claim to hit the ball so far. As has been said, if your PW is 42 degrees you're surely going to need a larger number of "traditional" wedges.

This is same for my irons, PW - 42 then I have a 48 & 54, so just the two needed

six degrees of separation, I'm sure I read something about that somewhere ;)

OK, my bag is now settled and looks like this - I started at Wedges, worked backwards and then driver back to wedges.

Driver 12 degrees
Fairway 18
Fairway 23
5 iron 26
6 iron 29
7 iron 32.5
8 iron 36.5
9 iron 40
PW 44
GW 48
W 52
W 56
W60
Putter

Didn't start with a wedge number in mind, but driver distance - 60 degree wedge full shot distance and then filled the gaps really.

I do have a 24 degree hybrid, which is sometimes swapped in to replace the 23 degree fairway or 5 iron, depending how and where I'm playing. Sometimes I will add the hybrid without removong a club, so swap out the 52/56/60 for 54/58.

Where have you been? 😄 My PW from the set I got in 2018 ish was 43°, current one is 41°. This is why I keep saying I don't count anything that's part of the iron set as a wedge (unless you use the SW from your set I guess, but post people seem not to). I had to go back and get the AW for my irons which is 46°, which then gapped nicely into my 50°.

My "old" (2022 Stealth) pitching wedge was 43 degrees bent to 44, and I was always told "yeah TM Stealths are real distance irons for beginners, strong lofts, meh meh meh" so I didn't think much of it if I hit my PW further than a pp hit a 9 iron. So I'm surprised that it is apparently pretty normal for one to be stronger than that. The 8 iron in my current set is 40.5 degrees.

Yeah, I don't bother getting into 'who hit what' on the course, it doesn't matter anyway. Only matters that you know what you're hitting!

To go back to your example, F0rebr0thers still hit it a long way to be fair - well two of them do. My irons are probably just as strong as theirs but they're still hitting PW when I'd be hitting 8 a lot of the time. Watched them last night v Tubes & Ange and Ronan airmailed a green at 140-ish with his wedge I believe. They've really embraced the 'grip it and rip it' style of play I think.

Oh yeah, they're still big hitters. Just very wayward! I used to hit my old 44 deg PW about 140y, so I reckon I'd could hang with them with equivalent equipment. They do hit their woods longer than me, though (at least on average). Ronan's 3W is a joke.
