The post about slow play and handicaps which seems to start with putting the blame on society members who are perceived not to be 'real' golfers without official handicaps has me a bit annoyed.

I am on the committee of a society with over 60 members who have about 9 meets a year. We use a lot of local courses in the south west and get 25-30 people out for each meet. Of the 60+ members, over 70% are also members of clubs and have official handicaps.

is this representative of societies out there, or do the majority of societies actually consist of hackers that barely know which end of the club to hold?

Our society is the same. Very few of our members don't have official handicaps and the ones that don't have them aren't the slow ones.

Just a curious question (because we don't have societies like that in Germany, at least not that I know of), how are nett scores calculated for the members which don't have a handicap? Is it all gross scores only? Or do you have an internal handiap system somehow?

All the socities I play in everyone is a member of a club and has an official HC

Just a thought. Could a society register itself as an official golf club and then be able to issue official handicaps, or do you have to own or be resident at a golf course?

we have society handicaps which are managed in a similar way to official handicaps but you get a cut for wining, even with 28 points! You must use your society handicap unless your club handicap drops lower

I play & really enjoy society golf , Most of our society members have official handicaps aswell , I must admit when I look at the Saturday timesheet I will avoid playing directly or shortly after the societies because it can be slow , NOT ALWAYS the case but you gota accept the possibility

This is down to a few factors tho , one may be ability of a few of the society , one is they may familiarity with the course & one is its a day out for the society people, some it may be their once a month game ,

The club of course can help by allowing proper times and not cramming society times & club times on top of each other ,

Remember the revenue of the societies helps take the financial burden off ordinary club members

We keep our society handicaps totally separate , when society was big it was
Overall cut 3 shots
cat winner cut 2
r up cut 1

if u play 3 comps & don't feature u get a shot back ,

report breaking sss to ur club if ur a member ...

Works well for us

not sure you would call them a society as such, but there was a group of guys who call themselves the Eriskay Golf club, there were part of Torvean golf club but they fell out and are now associated to Tain and are now members of the SGU, i think they have a couple of guys who;s are only members of this group and have a handicap
