Society getting angrier ?

Asking someone to take a day off is abusive? New one on me, but Hugh, if you thought that was abuse then apologies.

As for your first point, uh yes, Government and opposition also have something else in common, they are politicians. Hence political slant (not leaning to a party one way or the other), a conversational angle...
It's an example of the lack of nuance I was talking about earlier, in respect of forums, WhatsApp groups, etc.
If another poster and I are friends then our comments may be friendly banter, but to a contributor who doesn't know us they might be read as condescending and argumentative.

I think people are becoming less tolerant. Nowadays, it is too easy to accuse people of being racist/right wing/left wing etc just because they have a different view to you. The middle ground seems to have gone

Not sure that the middle ground has gone so much as we have seen an increase in giving contrary opinions a derogatory name to avoid debate. If your opinion is contrary, and no matter that your opinion is not slanted in any of these directions, if it can be labelled as racist or homophobic or misogynistic or anything else then it can be disregarded and harangued into silence or it could be derided as woke or political correctness gone mad, it happens on both sides. Not every contrary opinion is derived from a position of hate but it is hard to put that across these days.

There was a satirical TV news show about 20 years ago. During an interview, the anchorman badgered a politician into declaring war on another country. The news then moved seamlessly into its pre-planned war coverage.
I'm reminded of it regularly when I watch the news, listen to the radio, catch a newspaper headline. Not all, but many journalists always on the lookout for a "gotcha" moment, even if they have to spend an hour setting it up.

Reminds me of the film "Wag the Dog"

I've always been 'angry'... Back in the day I used to have to get off my BFA to 'exercise' my anger... Now I can 'exercise' it whilst sat in my armchair... Much preferred the old ways a whole lot more rewarding...

Once a gobbie shite always a gobbie shite (y)...

I posted in another thread that I am getting more like Victor Meldrew. Railing at the world. Mainly because of the stupidity of so many people who believe what is posted on Social Media and see that as gospel, without knowing anything about the source.
The fact is that Social Media has allowed more of the stranger people in society (including ex POTUSA) who spout whatever they like, without foundation, and then gets other equally stupid people to believe it and you can see the reaction.
As has been said, I don't think people are any angrier than they used to be. Just look at the history of this and any other country and all the trouble and strife caused by angry people. Way back to pre-Roman times.

Sounds like "Drop the dead Donkey"

I remember when the pandemic lockdown started and not long after on a Sunday morning news programme they interviewed a very well spoken professor. He gave a very good talk on things with the reporter constantly asking him when he thought we would get back to normal. In the end he said this most profound statement I ever heard regards lockdown.
” we don’t ever want to get back to normal, as normal was the problem in the first place “. Think that sums up most of what sadly will happen again once 21st June comes round.

As the title says , are we as a society getting angrier ? You just have to look at a few topics on here to see we seem to be getting more aggressive , there seems to be a lot more "professional outraged "
where it looks like people want to be more outraged than the next person this often leads to escalating insults, slurs and outright hostility among us .
Is it lockdown ? Or is it just people in general ? There looks like a willingness to demonize sections of population for just holding views that are not consistent with our own and this is not a comfortable place to be.
The recent thread about women's safety was a prime example , we all agree its an important topic, but some just flew off the handle which led to a locked thread, thus stifling an important debate.
This is not poke at anyone in particular just an observation of the human race , i say that as its not gender specific we all seem to be angrier, male and female, young and older .

Society appears to be getting angrier because there are more ways for people to express their dissatisfaction, and more people willing to try to inflame the masses for their own purposes, including some contrived culture wars. However, violent crime rates are at an all time low.

The world is a lot more connected than it ever was. Back in the 70’s and 80’s what you knew was what you saw on tv or read in a newspaper. Big world events were usually 2 paragraphs on page 6 or “in other news” so we weren’t as aware.

Now someone in Fiji farts and puts it on Social Media and the world can know about it. Also the more unsavoury stories garner the most reaction so they’re front and centre now. Most of us are sane rational people who look at things objectively. Some however will take that Fijian Fart to the streets and protest it.
