So much for blades….

no i part ex,t it for a reliant robin, even you must admit the game has become a lot easier with the advance in technology,if you started with a set of clubs that let you hit the ball from anywhere on the face and still gave you distance why would you wish to buy a set of clubs that you had to hit the sweet spot every time, look at the low h/c players on these pages and at your golf club, are they better players than years ago or is it due to the help of the equipment,me thinks the latter.
Your right, I was a better golfer 20 yrs ago and technology has helped. But I would say it was the ball more than the irons because to get low you have to hit the ball solidly and these new clubs are not offering me any extra help. If I get the right set up then I will hit the ball out the face all day long. The new drivers have just promoted thrashing but if you could control a classic driver it's easy if not dangerous because you can fall into the thrashing trap or over swinging etc... I am a better putter now though :)

Id happily still play with either, the spin from a good wedge seemed so much better back then in my opinion, granted you got a round maybe two max from the professionals, the Maxfli revolution balls were fantastic but dulled in colour very quickly. I suppose at least you always knew which ball was yours!.

Dont forget the biggest big bertha came out in 1999 ish too, the game wasnt that much harder 20 years ago, 60 years though, definitely though.

yup I can imagine 60 years ago it was a different game. I was actually talking pre- game improvement irons at the time I was playing Mizuno TP18s and my driver was something like a TM burner and the 3 wood was a Sundridge or the first Mizuno T-zoid.
The balls were great for spin but as you say they didn't last too long, I played the balata 100s then the professional 90s when they became available.
But lets be honest if you were playing 60 years ago you wont be playing better now your age would be having some affect.

I would also counter that the modern game doesn't allow for long careers on the golf course, its far too stressful on the body (if you play like a modern professional)

Luckily there is so much money thrown at the pro game that you dont need a long and fulfilling career any more to become rich. A short and lucrative one will do rightly it seems.

Wish we could go back to these!!! They are so lovely to play with and it would sort a lot of issues out!

Played 9 holes tonight with the S55's. So glad I stuck to my guns and bought the right set of clubs in the end.
I emailed Titleist and got a reply back yesterday, they offered to re-fit FOC and then make any alterations FOC (with the same fitter!). A kind offer, but IMO it comes too late. I should have come away with the right fit first time out @ £50 a fitting.

So true!

i tried the S 55 but talked myself out of them, perhaps I will have a quiet word with myself and sort it out!
