Smartphones now legal

Nor will one be forthcoming - as there is nothing to consider apologising for!

Scene matching might(or might not) be something relevant to Cruise Missile targeting, but it's only infinitesimally remotely possible to be something used for Golf distance calculation - imo of course! To suggest anything more strikes me as patently ridiculous (certainly currently), especially from a committed abstainer from DMD use in the first place!

The specification of limitations of use of Cameras seems to me to be more simply a specification of how known facilities available on devices can/cannot be used. Taking snaps of the beauty of the course - fine. Taking videos of players in such a way as it can be used to assist during the round - Not allowed!

I just gave it as an example of how technology which has no current use in respect of a golf aid could in the future be used in ways that the R&A wouldn't like. As it happens I'm not for a moment suggesting scene matching would actually be of any benefit at all in respect of distance measurement.

But a weather App in itself does not make the phone non conforming, would depend on the nature of the app and how it obtained its information.

So if a FC turned on the first tee in a comp with a Smartphone as a DMD, how can I know how his Weather App obtains its info..? How do I know if his phone is conforming or not?
Not having a go, just putting forward a scenario....

But you don't need to know, it is up to the player to know whether all of their equipment is conforming and not their FC.

I guess you must ask - and if he replies that it is compliant then it is on his conscience if it is not and he has knowingly told you a porky. Maybe clubs should require all members to have their smartphones approved for use - just take it into their pro shop; the pro checks it and registers it on a database (spreadsheet); pro then sends member a text message then verifies it's approved. So if you are asked about your phone you simply show your the text. Maybe that becomes part of the standard pre-round routine in the way we identify our ball and show PPs the identifying mark on your ball.

Buy would you need to know that your FC was playing by the rules?

Which if their DMD was non conforming (laser with slope / non conforming smart phone) they would be playing outside the rules.....

I just think they should blanket say all smart phones are OK, are many people really likely to be able to compensate a shot differently for a 22 mph cross wind to a 10 mph cross wind that my smart phone has measured.

And if he doesn't know..?
And if it isn't conforming but he's wears blind that it is, where do we go from there...

My point is that, by the looks of things, some phones are OK ,some not.
With nonconforming drivers there is a list of dodgy clubs....
There shouldn't be a scenario where a phone used as a DMD that there is doubt as to its legality

are you for real? far easier if they either simplified the rule or had a list of conforming devices

Why should they simplify the rule? The answer is for the individual to ensure his device is compliant. Will they ever be able to have a comprehensive list of compliant devices? Dunno - doubt it myself.

If I am standing on the tee about to play someone I do not have that list to check that his smartphone is on it and therefore compliant - were I to ask him. Yes I know it is the players responsibility to ensure their equipment is compliant - but that doesn't help me if I am KO'd by a player using an illegal device. Surely what I suggest is a simple solution to implement until the confusion that many seem to have over smartphone compliancy is resolved.

Not a big deal to implement and all uncertainty removed. Don't really see the issue.

If you have reason to believe a FC is using non complaint equipment then you should report the matter to the committee. There is a list of conforming (as opposed to non conforming) drivers th Hough with new devices (phones etc) and apps coming out everyday then I am not sure such a list could ever be kept up to date. Incidentally there is no list for irons, putters, wedges or fairway woods but I hear no one complaining about that and I have come a cross players using non compliant wedges.

For a smartphone to be non-compliant the function would have to be obvious. Take the weather 'app'. Just look at it. If says forecast or location 'nearby town' is is obviously using the internet. A built in thermometer is obvious.

That eliminates the first hurdle. If there is any other 'specific way' feature, the 'specific way' will be obvious if the player tries to use it (eg putting it on the ground to measure the borrow).

The bigger problem is with a laser DMD which has a built in slope feature (eg Nikon 1000AS), which we have been issued with for course rating but cannot use in play.

Of course, listing conforming phones is not the full story. It would have to be matched with all the conforming apps. As both phone makers and app producers add products to the market every day it seems, who is going to keep the list updated. The producers will not wait for the RBs to approve the product as they have no real interest in keeping the RBs happy. There are probably twice as many golfers who don't play in comps as do. And even more who will find these feature useful for non-golfing purposes.

its all codswallop end of! I am off 22, I use a smartphone with a golf gps app, I am still going to go round in roughly the same score as without, in fact I might even do worse by trying to be 'cute'!

However, my enjoyment is heightened and therfore my enthusiasm is as fervent as ever... stuffy suited gits need to look at the big picture, the pro's and elite amatuers are a different kettle of fish but individual comp rules can deal with that.

Why not take 18 clubs and tee up off the reds it will all enhance your enjoyment.

lol, never mind. I was speaking matter of fact, light hearted. If I play in a comp I play by the rules, I was merely stating that what differnce on an amatuer level does using a smart phone or dedicated (inflated price tag) DMD make in the grand scheme of things.

Next you will be pulling me up for having the wrong type of trousers on :D
