Smartphones now legal

I'm confused. (thought I would be the first)

"Is the distance measuringapplication capable of measuring conditions or providing information other than distance (e.g., wind speed, temperature or club recommendation)?"

I would argue that my phone doesn't do this, as it can't measure the temp around me? Am I wrong to believe this?

my DMD app doesnt either, however answer no and you get to:

Does the device contain other applications or features that, if referenced at any time during a round, might assist the player in his play (e.g., anemometer, thermometer or club recommendation)?

end of debate.

Thats the box that irritates me to be honest. It's vague enough to provide wriggle room and will lead to arguments. I could argue that if I was to access a weather report, that this information would be at best a prediction of weather conditions and not a factual account. However, I've only just got out of bed and my tinnitus is playing up so I may just be mis-reading the information...

Edit... At least this thread should pull attention away from some of the patronising, pompous, condescending twaddle that is being peddled on the "where should I stand" thread...:D

but if you preset a location and get through the internet updates from the met office ie met office app? would this then be the same as measuring temperature?

But both options from that decision box lead to a No Breach of Local Rule, assuming you comply with the small print?

I don't know of any apps that measure wind or temperature? And I don't have any apps that would recommend a club?

you are looking at the wrong box dude, yes to the above is a breach. a no to it, is not a smartphone i am aware of and would not be that smart! but i suppose as per bluewolf, is a weather report measuring temp or is it best guess forecast.. little bit of a grey area still..

This is the Golf Monthly forum.
Expect some patronising, pompous, condescending twaddle to arrive sometime before 6pm...

Also you could argue the spirit level built into ios7 could give you an advantage for measuring slopes.

...but the text states that there is no issue with the spirit level if you don't use it.

From what I can see 'most' smartphones would now be ok, if the apps don't use the offending features, and if the player does not try and use those features. (With the except of temperature and wind speed)

What about this app?

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/wind-meter/id306375551?mt=8

don't even have to have it installed, the hardware is capable of doing it.... so it would be a "feature"?

i am just playing devils advocate, i think its stupid and smartphones should be allowed...

USGA link, will the R&A follow or hold out?

The cynic in me would suggest that this will never be cleared up as the market for hand held DMD devices would pretty much disappear almost overnight. Lot of companies would lose their revenue stream unless then can convert to being app producers and I would not be surprised if they were not lobbying the R&A pretty hard.

That is simply an app that 'tries' to use the microphone as a wind meter ... I would doubt it was useful or accurate.

....and yes my original take on this was the same (until they wrote this new PDF), but since they are changed some the original text I believe that unless your phone has those very specific hardware features, or your dmd app tries to use such features, then your okay.

well i suppose for now its irrelevant to us as its the US, however interesting times ahead for the likes of bushnell, garmin, skycaddy etc as Greg points out!

I doubt it's the us only, simply that they have updated the website quicker. (Same thing happened when the belly putter were made, the usga site was updated straight away the randa one took a few hours longer).

I won't be changing from skycaddie as my phone is not waterproof, and it would probably kill the battery during the round before finishing.
