Smart TV's?

Can anyone advise me on buying a Smart TV that connects to the internet please. I went into Currys the other day but the assistant could barely spell TV never mind advise about them. Are they capable of running Skype and do they come with a built in camera like a laptop or do you need to buy one to plug into a USB port or something. Many thanks in advance.

not an expert but was looking at smart tvs, decided on instead getting a samsung smart blue ray player. there may different types of smart but this connects to tinternet but it doesnt have windows etc. it does have bbciplayer facebook news apps etc and netflix. does what i want and need. sounds like your looking at a media station type for your needs

Got a dongle for our Panasonic last week, can access my pc and look at videos, pics, whatever. Can't get BBCI player cos my Tv is 2009 and it has to be 2010 or newer, sure we get different film channels like netflix etc but all in all not really worth £80 in my opinion. Daughter and her boyfriend have just bought a new Panny 3D so will give it to them and use the WII for BBCI player.

You want a smart tv, get a base unit and conn t it via hdmi to your tv. Wireless mouse and keyboard and you've got a fully functioning pc through your large tv screen.

Smart tv's are more reliant on apps as mentioned, so you are limited to what you can do.

Get an Xbox and a kinect...video calls, Netflix, Facebook, I player, 4 od, 5 on demand all on there

I wasn't impressed with the limited options on our Samsung Smart TV. You also have to rely on Samsung to update the software otherwise you get left behind.

I've got one of these media pc's plugged into it our TV now. It's very flexible and not too pricey. I bought a seperate wireless mouse as it gets a bit annoying switching between the touchpad and keyboard.

Thanks for the info guys. Think I'll look into the base unit and wireless keyboard / mouse option.

Xbox for me, although have a Samsung t'interweb tv too. Use kinetic for video calls via msn messenger, hoping Skype will be available soon as Microsoft now own them....
