Smart Meter

Any experiences, pros &cons with e-on next or smart meters in general.

None with eon next but Smart meters brilliant for me

I have to have one to be able to get my smart energy plans which save me money

not to be confused with an in home display.. if you dont want to watch the usage live just put them in a draw and forget about them

the actual smart meter itself is good and you can see on various apps your usage to see the real cost

I dont see much cons of a smart meter tbh

No real cons of a smart meter unless you are one of the tin foil hat brigade. It means you no longer get estimated bills, they should always be accurate. It may make you change your habits when you see usage through the day, see the spikes occur.

If you don't want to see the cost figure mounting up then just turn the meter to face the wall. It is what I have done now :D

since we got the solar its great to see the instant drop in day usage
dont think our energy company are as happy when we dont take a KW from them for 8 hours lol

I'm sick of being asked to get a smart meter. It won't work due the location of the meter requiring the signal to go through 4 walls each with 5 layers of foil to reach the nearest mobile mast. Still get a phone call or letter every 3 months.

There are new ones that go over your home WiFi

Still wouldn't work as thereare still 3 walls for the signal to through. I'm not particularly fussed, it takes all of 30 seconds to put a meter reading in every month.

That isn't the point of them, that's just the benefit to you the consumer, they help the grid manage there load and can balance accordingly

British Gas, who I'm with, are offering cheap rates for Sunday if you have a smart meter. I'm considering this but the wife says that I'd have to do the washing coz she's busy doing the Sunday dinner. Seeing that Sunday is a big golf day at my place, I'm now having second thoughts.

Put washing in machine, add powder / liquid, press start, walk away. That's about 30 seconds, not a toughie. I'd snap their hand off if they offered it to me.

I would 100% be taking the wife up on the deal....

Whoever is doing dinner puts the washing on in our house, whilst other baths kids

Apparently tho that's not the washing the washing is putting it away

I said fine I'll do that .. did it wrong twice and she never asked again 😆 in my defence I made proper effort to do it right but I got a txt

"Where is eldests uniform I can't find it"

I put it in the wardrobe with the rest

"That's her next size up uniform.. why would you put it there"

Didn't know there was a size system to the wardrobe 🤯

We've got a smart meter with Octopus and Mrs Colch gets messages from them to say that between 2pm and 4pm electricity will be free on certain days (normally when it's windy and they have excess) so that's when the tumble dryer and dishwasher go on. And on some of their tariffs you get paid to use electricity.

How does she get the messages, and are you on a special tariff?

We use that all of the time. I've put a load on today, due to finish as I walk through the door tonight. Really handy feature.
Ours does that as well. Additionally, when planning for end of day we can put it on in ECO mode and it takes 4 hours instead of but less energy and water.
It also has Wi-Fi functionality and we could start it remotely, but we never bothered to set it up.

We have a smart meter. It was put in last month FOC. It's good to monitor your usage and you can benefit from the lower priced rates as outlined above.
However, there are lots of discussions going on about Smart Meters at the moment.

The hidden agenda behind smart meters
Can I refuse a smart meter?
Do I have to accept a smart meter?
Delayed smart meter programme fails to hit targets and secure public support

And this will have a lot of people worried (also covered in the last link above).

She gets an email a couple of days beforehand. We're on a tracker tariff. We still get charged for the "free" electricity but they then credit the account with however much we used during that time.

Do 'smart' meters measure gas and electricity usage?
Does an electric 'smart' meter tell you which devices are using what what power? Don't people understand that when they turn a switch on power will be used and that a 3kw heater will use more than a 60w bulb. Does it tell you that you have left a light on in the spare bedroom? How smart is smart really? What does it tell you that you don't already know?
I was about to ask, "What smart things does a 'Smart' meter do". They don't seem to be smart at all, merely measuring and communication devices.

Which is smater than the old essentailly manually read meter's. Others have explained that they allow you to go onto smart tarriffs as they record and communicate meter readings by the half hour. It also benifits the supplier in that they no longer have to send out staff to read the meter.
