Was in a 4 ball yesterday and we lost the 3 ball ahead of us. We had a 2 ball behind us so on the 5th we were looking for 2 balls on the right i waved them through. They took a while after both going out of bounds. My mates weren't happy as it was me who waved them through. It was a short par 4.
There was a par 3 then 5 after them, what's the best place to wave someone through.

If you've lost touch with the group in front and are holding up the group behind, that is the right time to wave the following group through as per the etiquette of golf. So you were right imho. Did they continue to hold you up after this one mare of a hole?
Your not psychic Daz just a bit unfortunate on this occassion. :p I think your mates need to lighten up a bit. Tell them to chill, have a smoke, a drink or a bite to eat and wallow in the glow of knowing you have done the right thing.

Ha ha cheers mate, after the hole they were off. We caught a 4 ball up later so they had let them through too
If we're behind another 4 ball and keeping up with them should you let people through?
If they'd lost touch and were holding you up then yes. To be honest though if there was no one behind me and the hold up was only a minute or two on each hole, i'd be inclined to go with the flow. I don't know about you but whenever someone lets me through i have a tendancy to rush, and disaster is sure to follow. Sometimes its better for the card to smell the scenery.

While I appreciate the sentiment - and agree about the tendency to rush - the Etiquette part of The Rules states that you should invite them through.

This will allow the 'worst situation' 4, 3, 2 to become a 'best situation' 2, 3, 4 within a few holes.

That said, we started yesterday as a 3-ball in amongst 4-balls. We could have spent all day going through groups so it was not worthwhile. We just moderated our pace to fit theirs, adjusting it back when a Single, who started on the 10th picked us up on the 11th Tee.

Thanks Craw.

Message obviously hasn't got through to the '4 old gentlemen' either. Are you (or the lad from the shop) going to educate them? Otherwise you are in danger of hypocrisy.

My sympathies for your condition - I shall resist the temptation to associate it with you attitude. I'm sorry you consider my post condescending; it wasn't meant to be and I still don't see it as such. Your lack of response to my earlier post, in the thread, was a candidate also.

I don't consider myself a fast player either btw. It's just that a single is there (only) to play golf - and maybe to admire the scenery - whereas a 4-ball is something more of a social occasion - with respect for others at the venue being an essential ingredient.

The only clarification I'd need is how long you takes you to play as a 4-ball.

I've not actually played WK as a 4 ball yet!

My only medal round where I was out last with two 20+ handicap golfers was 4 hours 15 minutes. We were waiting on every tee! None of the higher handicap players caused us to lose any ground.

I have put myself into an earlier ballot for this weeks medal so we shall see what sort of time this weekend brings.

With regards to the 4 "gentlemen" I'll resist the temptation to call them coffin dodgers they offered the explanation "we're going in after 16" as they left the 15th tee. We took that as a "your not going through". Maybe I should have insisted on playing through but thought it best to find my feet first at my new club. Better to know who your going to "piss off" - just in case!!!

:mmm:

ive had my first 'talking to' by my captain, and guess what it was about lol slow play:eek: only guilty because I joined a 3 ball and two of them I will never play with again. on the first tee one of them lets call seagull (cos he kept tapping for worms) and the other lets call prima dona had a pre shot routine that gave the impression of being scratch or +1 or pro. bloody 10 handicapper.

I am now a grand total of 0.1 lower than at the start of the season.
So no, not really.

Machrihanish rules this year are no man nor beast gets more than a shot a hole so you've got next week to smash your bandito handicap.
