Slow Play - At what Point Do You Lose The Plot & Just Tee Off?

Never! It's not big and its not clever!!

I have had it done to me!! When I joined a club 5/6 years ago I was playing my very first medal, I was a bit slow, not saying I wasn't but we weren't that far behind the group in front, I hit my drive on 9, into the tress, then hacked out. Was standing in the middle of the fairway setting up to play my next shot when one of the guys behind decided it was time for him to drive. His drive hit me on the leg, luckily it bounced about 5 feet or so before it hit me. The ensuing chaos that followed probably wasn't what he had in mind when he told his playing partners, il hurry this group along!!!!!

NEVER and will NEVER tee off or hit a shot while there are folk in front of me. I always wait until they are at my best shot range and add another 20 yards on to it. I might get upset but would not wish to endanger anyone.

I try to use this formula too despite being really annoyed by being held up repeatedly. I have no problem if someone is slow BUT if they are then they should let faster players through.

If they are that slow report them to the secretary, if they are that slow and other people have been annoyed by them ask them to talk to sec to and he will do the the talking to them

This happened to us yesterday. We were waiting for the group infront to clear the green on a 275 yard par 4 to take our second shots, it was going to be a 30 second wait for the guys in the buggy behind us as they turned up on the tee as the old boys infront were putting the flag stick back. I turn back to take my shot when I hear the sound of a drive, look at the tee to see this yellow ball screaming towards my face, I dodge it as passes over my shoulder. I did shout "couldn't you see me!" and he held his hands up but he didn't apologise in the club house ten minutes later although he looked very sheepish.

Same here and then there's nothing worse than hearing "Go on, you're never gonna reach ' em".

Is an issue here possibly how long people wait until they tee off. So for example if the group in front of you is playing right at the max distance you have ever got then do you go?

Thinking about me and the people I play with probably do go. Or we say that the worst person (usually me) tees of first as there's virtually no chance of me reaching. Then by the time a better player comes on the tee then the group in front are miles away. So we are kind of breaking the rules a bit, but doing it to get things moving. Of course this is only in bounce games.

From memory I think I have only ever reached a group once, and then it was rolling on the ground. Maybe it's because I'm not that good and will look a bit of a tool waiting for someone 300 yards away to move on when I then go an slice it 190 yards. But perhaps this may be one of the issues?

Also for higher handicappers, if you take the logic that you should never play if there are people in range, then what about par 3s where the group are on the next tee that is quite close to the green. As from my experience I have had far more near misses when hitting the ball in those situations.

This is a good point, same danger but less 'poor behaviour'

True. But I suppose at the end of the day a Pro V1 into the midriff is a Pro V1 into the midriff. And if it came from someone having a worldy and hitting one 300 yards off the tee or some hacker like my good self slicing a 150 yard tee shot, it will still hurt.

I have played some courses where the tees are extremely close to the greens on the previous holes. And it doesn't need to be a par 3 for it to be clear that there is a large potential for someone getting hit. There's one hole on a course we play that is notorious for it as it's a bit of a blind shot to the green, with the next tee being about 5 yards to the left of the green. Every time we play we have to send a look out when hitting onto the green and also when on the next tee. And if you hear the lookout shout 'incoming' you protect yourself.;)

This is an issue with a tee box at my gaff.

The 5th tee box (Yellows) sits about 15 yards to the right of the 4th green. The whites are a little further (15 or so yards) back.

There is a big bush that covers all of the back tee's, buty leaves about 1/2 of the front, yellow tees, exposed.

Normally there aren't any issues, but there have baan a few close calls in the past with bushes being rattled and ball pitching in front of the tee box when stood on the tee.

If the group in front are walking just beyond where I think I can reach I'll play.

If someone is playing a shot there I'll wait as its not nice hearing a ball land 30yds behind you while you're stood over your shot.

Never of course. What exactly do you hope to achieve by doing it? If you don't end up hitting them, by the time you get up to your ball, you still have to wait for them again. Not once have I ever responded to a ball being hit up to me/past me with the thought, "oh, I'm obviously going slowly I should speed up".
