Hi Guys and Girls

I've played in sunny Spain and wet and windy Ireland this year and have experienced all the elements. I had a problem in Spain, it was so hot that I had to keep re-applying my sunscreen. In Ireland, there was no sun but my face was red raw after the wind beating it got. Both incidents are not good for the skin. I have tried a load of sunscreen but cant seem to find one that last long (ie no need to reapply every 2 hours, hence the hands will get greasy) nor one that protects your face against the harsh wind.

I have spoken to a good friend and we both agree that you do need to be careful and we have done some research on this subject. I have 3 questions :

1) do you think about your skin before and after a round ie do you think it is important nowadays to wear a sunscreen?

2) if Yes - do you actaully practice what you preach - what sunscreen do you wear?

3) would you like to see a sunscreen specifically for golfers ie would you buy it?

Let me know your thoughts, I am intrigued.

Cheers

'Burnt face' Paul.

Here was I thinking it was a sound opening post until question 3 which sounds as though you're about to come back with the whammy "and here's one we prepared earlier" As it happens I put factor 15 suncream on when it gets sunny. Tesco's finest. No thrills and to be honest I wouldn't buy a golfer specific range

As I understand it the sun screen factor numbers indicate the number of minutes of exposure protection. For a round of golf you would need a very high number ( 50+ )

I suffer badly in the sun.

Being quite pale and very bald I tend to burn pretty easily. Most of my rounds in summer I use Calypso 1-Day-Long sun lotion.

This stuff

You apply it 20 minutes before going into the sun and that's it. No more re-applying, does exactly what it says on the tin.

Just be mindful it stinks rotten when you apply it but isn't greasy and doesn't sit on the skin.

Ideal for golf

I think you have hit the nail on the head - sounds a good product and lasts the round but it stinks, does it discolour your white polo's?

Good to hear you do wear protection, as I have got older I am hearing a few more skin cancer horror strories, too much exposure over the years. 've never tried the Tesco cream but will do, hope it isnt greasy, hate having greasy grips!

It only stinks when you apply it, after that it's fine.

As for staining. I've just used the same stuff in Rhodes. No stains on any of my T-Shirts so should be OK on polos

Like I said, it doesn't sit on your skin, just forms a protective layer.

I suffer badly on the course either in sun or wind. Part of my problem is I sweat a lot from my head which means any suncream doesnt last long and also I get a fair bit of friction constantly wiping my face. Ideally would like a breathable sunhat that shades my whole head and face, but easier said than done without looking stupid

Hello Golfers,

I have been playing golf for about 25 years now. I have make a lot of research about sunscreens and the sun itself.
If you like to use sunscreen use one of natural resources. There are good natural sunscreen, of course all of the famouse brands have really bad ingredients, and those ingredients are the ones that produces a lot of bad deseases.

Just google the site skindeep of ewg.org and you will be surprise!

I really dont use sunscreen anymore, I believe that the sun is good for us, for our skin, our health! Just need to know wich ours are save to be exposed! Like one scientific say "the best sunscreen is a long sleeve shirt and a good hat".

I'm also working on sungazing, just give it a search on google.

I respect any opinions, by the way if you are using sunscreen look on the active ingredients thats say ONLY Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide. If in active ingredients have more quemicals please stop using it!

Good Golfing!

Sorry Paul just as there is no drink for golfers, there is also no such thing as golfer specific suncream either.

I would never buy a product marketed that way ever ever as I would feel I am being conned!

try a product called SOL-GOLF they do a range of products and the sun protection spray is brilliant, the chap who runs the company is a member at my club and he gave us a complementary pack for a comp he sponsors, non greasy and has a nice smell and lasts.

Panama Jack Sport 'n Surf is what I have used to good effect... Don't know where herself gets it from could even be from when she visits down under... They're a lot more savvay about sun/skin protection than we are... I try and look after my skin as 40+ years working with some pretty malicious chemicals has left it in poor condition already...
