Can you reach?

6400 yards is way to long for most. It depends on the layout, but 5800 yards is generally more than sufficient and can still be too long for many.
Our course is well under 6400 yds , but at 6000 I don't think it would be too long for most male golfers. I am a midhandicap older golfer and don't hit the ball very far but it feels fine for me. Doubtless as I get older I will advance forwards.

I guess a lot depends on terrain our course is not particularly hilly and you tend to walk upwards to tees so maybe it plays a bit shorter than it's measured distance.
I've quite enjoyed a few links courses significantly over 6000 yds where the ball runs well.

For those who can’t reach, have you considered playing off more forward tees (if rated for your gender)?
I think I already know the answer to this question 😉
We only have one par 5 having a couple of par 4's that are tough to reach adds to the fun.
Actually the most difficult one is slightly easier from the back tee than the most forward one as it gives a better angle and for ladies it's rated a par 5.

I would argue the distance isn’t stopping me, it’s the bunkers at 220-250 yards that deter or prevent me. Take those out and move them to 280+ yards to catch the big boys and I am fine no problem. Our course is too far out of date for the modern ball. It penalises the wrong golfers. I don’t see the point of a bunker at 180-200 yards in with a 6-10ft high lip. If I get on a green at 180-200 yards that’s good golf .. shutting down someone who can carry it at 250 and forcing them to play out of that bunker at 150yards out would toughen the course up massively.
Sadly there is little choice in the area for courses and mine is the best (?) ..
They did ask which bunkers they should remove and they were told .. so then they removed the wrong ones .. they just set up more for the long hitters.

Your 100% correct here, there's an awful lot of guys who go straight to the back tees when they would have a much more enjoyable game moving forward and making the course a bit shorter

It's a sound idea but..
My PP, CVG, is 71, can't hit the ball more than 200 yards with a driver, plays a course just short of 6400 yards, hits driver off 16 holes including some par 3s, can't reach par 4s in 2, can't reach par 5s in 3 (mostly) and can still shoot 15 over par.....and is down to his lowest index in 4 years....
Go figure 😋

Yes, easily. We are a short course at approx 5500 yards but all holes are reachable (for me).

Our par 5’s measure 564,455,470 and 495. Regularly on the latter 3 in 2, have made the 1st one in two twice.
