Sending off the wrong player

Totally agree. At the speed the modern game is played and with the ref who is in charge of the game seemingly being the only person who can't see 100 different slo mo replays of every incident, then mistake will happen. I am sure he did not do it on purpose and people have to accept that under the current restrictions refs have these things will occasionally happen.

But he had the benefit of the fourth official? He didn't see it, and went upstairs.

So he must have been told by the fourth official that Gibbs handled it - or is the fourth official only able to answer the question asked by the ref. So if the ref asked "did the player on the line handle the ball?" then the 4th official can only say Yes/No and cannot tell him the name of the player? Really?

Apparently spurs have suffered similar, but then I find that funny!

Refereeing is a tough job, but today's was just dreadful, given that he had so much advice. I know you kind of have to ignore the players, as most times they lie and cheat, but when one says it was me, you really do have to go with that!

I thought the precedent for PL refs that mess up is to ref in the championship temporarily as punishment.

Sorry mate wasn't having a pop at you. More the stupid rule that when a ref makes a mistake in the prem he is then sent to the Championship as punishment. What happens if he then makes a mistake that costs a team promotion or relegates a team? Just further proof that football is run by a bunch of morons.

what would you suggest should be his punishment then? It's a genuine mistake. A rather stupid one I'll admit, but the correct oh punishment was dealt out. I'd be surprised if he's relegated. That's generally for making technical mistakes like not interpreting a foul as a red.

It may be arrogant of the premier league, but sending a ref to championship is the only fair firm of punishment they can dish out. Can hardly sack him for it. Everyone makes silly mistakes in ther jobs, nobodies perfect.

Possibly the most unfortunate thing about this was that it was pretty much the only mistake he made in an otherwise very good performance in my opinion, unlike the completely inept and inconsistent performance of Chris Foy last weekend.

1 ref, 2 linesmen, and a 4th official why oh why did he not take 1 minute to consult them properly and work out what happened between them.

when the ox admitted to him and others were backing him up, he should have realised something was amiss.

thankfully it didn't affect the outcome of the game.

gibbs is too nice. many a player would have refused to leave the pitch until he came to the correct decision!

Don't know if a retrospective red is given for a plain handball for a mistaken identity. I know it can be done for aggressive behaviour. So stupid when 4th official can see on a monitor or be told by a reporter but they can't do anything about it. #blameblatter

Ha! Could well be the case! Gibbs should definitely be rescinded, but O-C may 'get away with it'!

Oh I don't know maybe a 3 match ban. Would Thisbe ok with you?

The fans pay to see 11 a side the best players NOT referees[/QUOTE]

No they don't, they pay to see a game of football played under the current laws. If you think that a ref should never send anyone off, despite whatever they do, because the fans are entitled to see 11 V 11 then fair enough, your opinion. But don't blame the refs for following the laws of the game.

Very selective quote where did I say a player should never be sent off. I pay my money to see the players NOT the ref. ==I am sure i said the rules need changing . This would help the ref.== He should be 100% he is right before he sends a player off can he be sure he got the right man on Saturday.== But under the current rules he is NOT allowed to rectify his mistake , he s told by the player " It was me ref" that's just not on. Very very poor.

Obviously a mistake was made, but re your rant at the end wanting to see best players not refs. He wasn't trying to make a show of it, it was an error. Everyone makes them. A player still should have walked as it was a blatant red. The worst think for me was. Ian Wright making a subtle dig about maybe the ref thought "they all look the same"!

So its OK as long as someone walks . If the ref had seen the incident which I don't think he did for whatever reason he has to be 100% sure before sending someone off. ==They do look the same they are dressed in the same kit but Ox had #15 on his back.==if they reviewed sendings off at half time it could have been sorted. ==He was informed by the players he had got the wrong man but still went ahead and sent Gibbs off thats careless. == If you want to spend your cash to watch the ref that's up to you it takes all kinds. ==Personally I dont give a dam what pundits think.

Can you tell me which law states you can send the wrong player off?

Great. So instead of punish him, he gets to referee our game against the bar codes on saturday. Because there's nothing riding on that is there...:angry:
