How can the ref get this wrong. He doesn't see a blatant hand ball in the area, (great save), by oxcart chamberpot. He goes upstairs, for a second opinion, and then sends off Kieron Gibbs. Gibbs says it wasn't him, Ox says it was him, Gibbs gets the red.

Ok, the game was lost in the first 5 minutes, but this level of ineptitude is stunning.

Cant the referee correct a judgement if for instance the fourth ref, inform him that he picked the wrong player,,, is the decision irrevecoably, even if the ref understand he made a mistake? i cant the rules,,,

anyway the game was great for the mighty Blues and daughter was attend the game at the Bridge and are really pleased off what she saw:thup:, except the ref error...

One of the more blatant errors a ref can make!

Having needed help to get the hand-ball in the first place (I think it was missing, but it's still a Pen and Red Card) he was on a loser all the way! Apparently happened elsewhere this season too.

I think that one will be rescinded and Oxlade-Chamberlain will get the suspension.

I unfortunately missed the 1st 10 mins or so, by which time the game was over! Mourinho's Stamford Bridge Fortress continues!

Don't know if a retrospective red is given for a plain handball for a mistaken identity. I know it can be done for aggressive behaviour. So stupid when 4th official can see on a monitor or be told by a reporter but they can't do anything about it. #blameblatter

The rule makers are 20 years behind The two players are similar in appearance that is why they have numbers on shirts. This could have been sorted in 30 seconds i.e. a monitor for the fourth official sorted. ==== Tech these days let you get things right but refs don't want it because it shows how many big decisions they get wrong but sky show that anyway and bad decisions stand. ======= If you watch the refs face he does not even hear what the players are saying as they are so used to the crap they have to put up with from players these days.==== Really poor from the ref but you have to admire the display by Chelsea. ===Some rules in football need sorting .===RESPECT for refs NOT TODAY. === I think they should have a monitor in refs room at half time and if they have sent someone off in the first half they should look at it if they are wrong let player back on for 2nd half if they think they got it right he stays off! ===The fans pay to see 11 a side the best players NOT referees

Obviously a mistake was made, but re your rant at the end wanting to see best players not refs. He wasn't trying to make a show of it, it was an error. Everyone makes them. A player still should have walked as it was a blatant red. The worst think for me was. Ian Wright making a subtle dig about maybe the ref thought "they all look the same"!

The ref should be demoted to the championship for that howler. I'm a bit annoyed with the Ox because the ball was clearly missing the goal. but at the end of the day it wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference to the result.

About time football had a video ref I say.

Stan Collymore did the same on twitter too.

It's ridiculous, I remember when Blackburn had a player sent of against saints once he'd gotten 3 yellow cards and ref said he thought he'd booked a different player (also white) the first time. It was a genuine mistake. But I think they need to think carefully before trying to bring race into this.

I played with a black guy in the swindle today, and he commented exactly the same. In a jokey way, but same comment.

Trouble is, the player who hand balled had a flipping great 15 on his back, and the one who got sent off didn't.

And, they look nothing like each other. Not even close. Gnabry/chamberlain I could accept, but Gibbs?

Mourinho himself said his assistant thought it was arteta. It was incompetence. Not racism. I think that between the time they took coming to a decision, which I think was based on Chelsea players appeals they took a punt on who they thought it may have been. As you've said, they don't look similar but I think they just weren't paying attention. Re numbers in their backs, ref couldn't see the number as player was facing him.

on a separate note. Can someone explain to me why it's acceptable to say they look the same of also black??

The ref didn't see the incident at all, he went upstairs. The fourth official saw the same footage we did, and Chamberlains number was clearly visible.

No excuse.

Oh, and I'm not accusing anyone of being racist, just incompetent.

No they don't, they pay to see a game of football played under the current laws. If you think that a ref should never send anyone off, despite whatever they do, because the fans are entitled to see 11 V 11 then fair enough, your opinion. But don't blame the refs for following the laws of the game.

Ok, but he still sent the wrong player off!

Totally agree. At the speed the modern game is played and with the ref who is in charge of the game seemingly being the only person who can't see 100 different slo mo replays of every incident, then mistake will happen. I am sure he did not do it on purpose and people have to accept that under the current restrictions refs have these things will occasionally happen.

So you are saying that the refs need help and video assistance. But he should be demoted anyway even though he did have video assistance?

Why should he be demoted to the Championship? Does it not matter if he makes mistakes in the Championship?
