Scratchers!

Is it typical of The BRS booking system or do I smell? I've been at the new club just over two months now, and virtually every week someone has scratched from the group I'm in. On three occasions all my playing partners have scratched and the starter has juggled things around, with me waiting around for up to half an hour.

Team of four tomorrow, one has scratched. 3 ball next week, and both have scratched.

In over 40yrs of golf, and 12 clubs I've never known anything like it. To say I'm getting hissed off is a mild understatement. Another month of this and I'll write it off and move clubs.

Or is it just the ease of scratching under the BRS system?

Don't you know any of the players at your new club. When I first joined Royal Musselburgh it was a grind for a good few months, now I play with lots of the guys, or maybe that's because I can get them on Dunbar for £15 a skull. However, one or two guys ask if I want to play in the odd medal or game and I say no because they couldn't give a toss when I first joined.

The other two courses locally are only average. Cruden Bay and Murcar. Got the GM visit to Cruden coming up in just over a month. Decision time then probably...

I had it at the last place Bri'. Lads jumping around on the Startsheet every week just to play with their mates.

I found the problem there was that you could book on up to 3 players and remove the same if needed. Personally I think it makes for a Cliquey club.

I think the better system is booking as a single only which the club I've rejoined have.

It baffles me why some want to play in the same 3 ball every week.

The two that have scratched from next weeks 3 ball have joined a single immediately below!
I would be off to see the club manager for a refund, I would expect it to get sorted quite quickly as they wont want you leaving.

Thankfully we we don't let that happen at all, I make sure everyone gets a game with a roll up, our comps are all drawn so it's easy to meet new members as well.

I recently joined a new club which uses a brs system ,but no issues as of yet fingers crossed.i prefer a random draw to be honest but each club is different I suppose

Bri, they're probably just a bit intimidated at the thought of playing with such a high quality ball striker as your good self.......

We have BRS at my club, can't say this happens.
But it does open up the possibility to do so.
Frantically grab a tee time when bookings open, as the week goes by, people withdraw, see a better time, earlier/later, so switch, see a gap with guys they know, so switch.......
We have rules for no-shows, but nothing for late withdrawals, known people to withdraw within an hour of tee times, mainly weather I'd say.

This is an area I think golf clubs can do a lot more than what they currently do.

I've just recently joined Leven where a lot of the medals are non courtesy and was really consious about moving to a club where I didn't know anyone. I decided to just leap in with two feet and got involved with the winter league team which has allowed me to get to know quite a few folk to the point where after only a few months I feel right at home.

I know though that a large part of that is down to the general approach by my club and I would bet that by in large clubs and indeed their members may not always be as welcoming, which is a real shame.

Their loss though as I really enjoyed your company at the Gailes last year.

Personally, to those saying to speak to the sec etc, it's not something I would do. I wouldn't want to 'force' anyone to play golf with me.

Are there any 'new members' evenings or such like? Would be a good way to find some games. Whilst this is sort of forming your own 'clique' and I agree it's always great to play with different people, this might get you over the hurdle you face right now.

I wrote something about this the other week......clubs need to find better way to ingrate new members. SAOL offers a system where an existing member shows you around, plays with you in comps and introduces you to other members etc. I think this is a great idea.

That's the exact sort of thing we do

Weekly meetings with Capt , Vice and myself

We also have members of swindles and roll ups there and people are introduced to them.

Dependant on what time they would like to play regualry then they are invited to join one of the rolls and indeed sometimes two. That person when shadows one person in comps and roll ups to make sure they are happily integrated into the club.

It seems to be working very well - our swindle has had 8 new members join in the last 12 months and that's pretty much the same as most of the swindles

The club should be doing more for you. That said Aberdeen can be a funny place. I was punched and called all sorts for having a Glaswegian accent when in Aberdeen for a wedding a few years back.

Not all people are the same but I wouldn't rush back to Aberdeen.

I'd ask to speak to the secretary or the club captain, explain your situation and tell them your thinking of leaving. What have you got to lose?

But what if there aren't any evenings or events for new members? How do they get integrated into the club, especially if people take their names off to play with mates and leave the OP with the prospect of not having a game at all?

At ours the Pro knows who are willing to go out with newbies. He sorted HID out with a group when we'd first joined.

Fair point. In that case, I'd ask the club to arrange some. Not an easy situation, granted.
