Hi

I wondered if someone could explain why the score card for the local course has
White yards and Par
Yellow yards and Par
Red yards and Par
Why different yardage and par for each hole?

Cheers

Par varies according to distance and between gents and ladies tees. Suppose you had a hole which was 500 from the whites, 460 from the yellow and 430 from the red. That could well be a 5 from the white, 4 from the yellow, but a 5 again from the red.

White tees are normally the competition or "medal" tees for men.
Yellow tees are the ones you use if going for a friendly knock (usually) and the ones that you will play most of your golf from.
Red tees are the ladies tees.

There are 3 starting points for each hole,(sometimes 4) one for each category.
Men's competition tees, white
Mens's everyday tees, yellow
Ladie's tees, red
And the Par depends on the distances from each tee as already explained above :)

You will occassionally come accross a blue tee.
That will be on bigger courses and denotes the 'Championship Tees'
Don't worry about them for a while :)

I don't live oooppp North.
Oh wait. I am north of Watford, so you're right.
I used my lucky blue plastic tee yesterday.
It's supposed to keep elephants away and touchwood, it's working so far. :)

Most decent courses should let you play from the whites anytime you want. I haven't played from the yellows in ages. In fact, if I know in advance that a course insists on it, I will not go.

I have been a member of Ascot for about three years now and think I've played the yellows maybe 5-8 times since joining. I prefer the challenge of playing the course of the full length everytime and tend to get gung ho or lazy if I'm off the yellows and go for greens or take drives on I wouldn't normally consider usually with dire results.

I always allow my guests to play the whites if they want to although I did have to get a dispensation for the GM Spring Meeting as all societies have to normally play off the yellows. I always want to play any away course off the whites too to enjoy the full challenge.

I always play off the whites at our place. There are a quite a few holes that play completely differently than off the yellows.

Most of the Par 3's play 30-40 yards longer and some Par 4's where they push the Whites right over next to the tree line and OOB.

And the Par 5's they push them right back so only monster hitters will get to the green in 2, whereas from the yellows two good strikes from a reasonable player will see you on or close.
