rules question (a weird one!)

But it is a device which has the potential to contain cheating applications such as tempo (surely music could also be a tempo guide if the right beat was chosen?).

Much like a lazer with slope, or an iphone with compass, or a digital watch with a barometer or compass setting.

My point exactly

But isn't it true that iPhones can't be used because they have certain apps installed that are deemed illegal even if you don't use them? I see no difference here really.

If a phone has certain apps then, yes, its true that they would be illegal even if you dont use those apps when you are using the iphone as a gps. The only difference as far as I recall is that compasses and wind speed/direction apps are specifically outlawed and other things eg tempo app would only be illegal if used. So, if the phone was being used for gps and didn't have the illgal things but had a tempo app that wasnt being used you would be ok

I do stand to be corrected though!

I think it's hard to 100% specify any broken rule - there isn't a rule which say "no listening to music on tape, CD or digital music playing devices" but...

In rule 14-3 it is prohibited to use any artificial device that " might assist him in making a stroke or in his play". Well, the use of the iPod relaxes him and therefore surely improves his play his own admittance, hence a rules breach.

If that were the case, you coudlnt wear a watch on yoru wrist because it affects the balance/tempo/centrifugal force. Or spikes on your shoes, or sunglasses ...

regarding the ipod music, it's amazing how upset you lot all get about being denied respect, and that anyone playing a competition who does something a bit different from what you want shoudl be banned ...?

Anyway, rant over
Seriously though
Where exactly is teh specific ruling that says an iPhone can or cannot be used; what is the specific ruling in respect of an android phone with a gps distance system on it? Where is teh exact ruling taht says you cant wear a watch that has a compass on it ?

I've not seen any of these in the rules of golf, nor in (my admittedly 5 years old) decisions on the rules of golf ?

In fairness, I don't remember mentioning someone being "banned" in my post. I simply wouldn't play with them.

on a par with two of a three-ball taking a buggy leaving the third walking alone

That's very rude
:o :o :o :o :o :o

This happened to me in a medal last year! PLayed the full 18 holes and hardly said a word to the 2 fat bast&rds all the way round!

I think he was referring to me at Cooden last year
:o :o :o :o :o :o :o

not really, (and that is NOT why I can't make Cooden this year, shame 'cos I really like that course) but I see it all the time from societies at my course - makes for deadly slow rounds at times, especially as the b's in the buggies all suddenly lose the use of their legs
