apart from being pretty rude, is there any rule that would prevent a player from listening to music on an ipod while playing a competition. im only asking cos a friend of mine said it helped him stay calm in matchplay but something doest sound right about it!

No rule..at all, apart from like you say being pretty rude,a playing partner asked our pro a couple of weeks ago,and he said no ruling, except it would be deemed very rude..

I have gone out a couple of times with my headphones in when I know the course will be absolutely empty in the late evening.

I only do it when I am alone and there is no one else out on the course and would never consider it when joining others as it would be extremely rude.

Ash!!

Well. I wouldn't tolerate playing someone who wanted to be plugged into an iPod.

If that happened to me, I'd politely ask for a little respect. If not granted, I'd walk in.

I'm 95% sure any member of my golf club would support such a decision.

Rude? exceedingly. Illegal? no, probably not. In the spirit of the game? no, completely unacceptable.

**** it. I wouldn't even step on the course with such a person.

If the Ipod was just an ipod, then I see no rule issues,

but if the ipod was part of an Iphone, that had compass and weather apps, it would be illegal to use in competition even if those apps werent being used.

Imurg is pretty hot on these things, he'll be along in a minute to confirm

Fragger

no i totally agree with u guys that it is V. rude (i can gurantee he wont be doing it while playing with me!) i just wasnt sure if he was allowed to.

Mmmmm
Potential for a rule breach...

14-3 - Artificial Devices, Unusual Equipment and Unusual Use of Equipment

Except as provided in the Rules, during a stipulated round the player must not use any artificial device or unusual equipment, or use any equipment in an unusual manner:

As an iPod/Mp3 player is not what you would classify as usual golf equipment, there could be a case to answer.

And as above, if the music player is an iphone then you're up Sh1t creek without a paddle........

I though the etiquette section..... "All players should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy and sportsmanship at all times, irrespective of how competitive they may be. This is the spirit of the game of golf.".....may cover this. I don't think it is acting with courtesy and is certainly not sporting to ignore your fellow players for 18 holes.

However, there are some people who won't talk to you at all other than the bare minimum anyway so where do you draw the line? Best option would probably be to report to committee and let them have a word and say it's simply not an acceptable way to behave at the club.

The trouble with the Ettiquette section is that the bulk of it isn't actually part of the Rules themselves - you don't get penalties for not raking a bunker or replacing a divot and such-like.
I know what you're saying and I think the Committee should be informed .............

Does this mean that technically I shouldn,t use my iPhone scorecard/ stats app?

Only in competition. It wouldn't be a problem if using it during a friendly knock around. If you wish to enter stats into a app for a comp round then take a second scorecard and record the relevant info on it to enter afterwards. In fact an old school score card can be handier than the apps anyway unless you have GPS stats etc you want to include.

I usually designate each player column as a different stat.
Usually fairway x for hit arrows for left right long or short.
Next number of putts then strokes then penalties taken.

But how do you know he is listening to music and not some kind of Tempo App such as Tour Tempo? This would surely be deemed illegal?

You would have to ask him as its only breaking the rules if thats proven

Personally I wouldn't be willing to play with him but if I had no choice I would hope that the music is the "Flight of the bumblebee"

But isn't it true that iPhones can't be used because they have certain apps installed that are deemed illegal even if you don't use them? I see no difference here really.

The difference is whether the iPod has compass/weather etc etc
