Rory hate?

Are there any examples of McIlroy that could point to him being someone that is hard to warm too ?

The one thing you can be sure of is that Rory will not give a stuff!

His advisers (past & present) will have told him that irrational reactions by the public are sadly par for the course.

How can anyone HATE someone that they don't know, never met, only seen on tv or behind the ropes at a tournament?

HATE is a mighty strong expression

I agree. I don't hate him but I can't warm to him. I had the same feelings for the like of Corey Pavin, and even Langer when he was playing against Seve and the others. I haven't met him but I'm sure off the course he's a personable young man. Maybe it's just me morphing into Victor Meldrew as I get older but there is a niggling something I can't put my finger on that irritates. Lovely golfer in full flow

It's the hair, isn't it?

Boom... Karen for forum president....

And I love the guy.. I think he has handled his rise to fame admirably, with only minor slips.. He's a pleasure to watch, and he still looks like he enjoys the game........ Oh, and my kids love him too. He's instantly recognizable and draws kids into the game like (almost) no other...

My observation is that it seems to be an english thing (as Fyldewhite said also) rather than british. The Scots, Welsh and ourselves are pretty much happy go lucky wanting our guys to go well and are less disappointed about failing and more happy to have just got there in the first place then regroup and have another go.
When an english team or sports person fails, he/they gets jumped upon. When someone sees a little success, anything negative from their past gets raked up an the negative train rumbles on.

I have to say this is a very valid point and it doesn't just extend to British athletes though they do get the worst end of the stick.

I'm getting sick of the Hazels and Gabbys getting a Murray or Rory in a room and just focussing on the negatives. These are super-talented and usually pretty decent guys and these overpaid muppets sit there poking them. Sometimes I think they think the way to interview people is to make them as uncomfortable as possible to see if you can get a reaction or tears.

"Rory, great first round at the Open, well done, so, you've been horrendous on Fridays, what are you going to do tomorrow? Choke?".

"So Andy, you just lost, how bad do you feel? What do you think made you choke? Are you a disappointment to your family? More importantly, to Scotland? Oh, by the way you ceased to be British the minute you lost."

Sickening. The treatment Ireland get during the 6 Nations is sickening, I've often wanted to throw something at the interviewer, not fit to tie BODs laces but asking him why they didn't win that match, over and over, in 5 different ways, WHY DID YOU LOSE?!".

I was delighted when Usain Bolt called out Gabby at the Commonwealth games. But the way her and Colin Jackson laughed when the Wales 100m womens relay team, who had just run their best time ever for a relay, were disqualified, was absolutely appalling. If you didn't see it, you're better off.

are you mixing up the laughter they had when Bolt called her out, live.

I would be shocked, nae gobsmacked if they did what you said, plus no-one else appears to have mentioned it as far as I can see.

I never judge a person I have never met. As long as he conducts himself on the course, no spitting or swearing. If he or anyone for that matter want to live a rock&roll life style. That's there business. (not saying he does by the way) good luck to the guy. Make hay whilst the sun shines. It does not last forever.

Ffwd to 2.32, a bit of decorum was called for, not this, I'm not Welsh by the way, it's just another example of how insensitive the English presenters and pundits are, I was gutted for those girls who worked harder than anyone could imagine to get there.

I love the guy, he's part of the reason I took up golf, and most of the reason I emotionally invest in tournaments that he's at -it was as nerve-racking watching the final round of the open as watching my football team.

But I get why people dislike him, it's the same reason people dislike(d) Schumacher, Murray, Steve Davis etc. The media do build guys up, but in reality they tend to build up those with potential to be great. Rose gets a suitable amount of coverage, all nice and no-one is offended by him but in truth he's not a threat to world golf domination - he'll win an acceptable amount of tournaments and no-one will begrudge him any success. However, had he as a fresh faced amateur kicked on from his Open debut and contended every week I'm not so sure he wouldn't have faced a backlash.

Comments about RC and weather were immature for sure, but made by someone yet to mature and fully understand the implication of throwaway comments. He has since surely atoned for those. The honda-tooth saga is harder to defend, and he has learnt from that. The Olympics debacle is a situation he (and we) could do without, and as someone from the same part of the world as Rory, there will never be a winner in that discussion; but, to be fair, he has probably handled that better than elected politicians. The calling off of his engagement, well that's his personal choice, relationships breakdown all the time and it's not as if he cheated, followed through then left etc. so apart form the media obsession with making his relationship a celebrity frenzy, there's no reason this should be an issue going forward.

Yet, for all that, he's different - surely it's the quality of the golf that's important? Someone queried if he was that much better than everybody else, and, in my hackers view,at his best and everybody else's best, there's a gap. In full flow, his driving is better, his technical ability is far superior, his mentality is better and now it seems his putter is no longer a major weakness. It's fine (in my view) to dislike him or to enjoy him dropping shots especially if you're emotionally invested elsewhere (eg Westwood). I like Garcia, but last week I was delighted when Rory caught him.

For the record........I don't hate him , I never said that
As I was always brought up to believe hate was a very strong word and shouldn't be applied to a person

I just don't find myself ever rooting for him

But that's just me, my feelings, my opinion
Yes we all have one ( or should )

Funnily enough though I've always been a fan of Sergio Garcia and was desperately wanting him to succeed in the last couple of big events, but to no avail
I mention this, as we all know, Garcia can be as petulant as the next whining golfer, so this may seem odd to some
But I've just always been a fan
Just feelings, opinions, etc........a bit like supporting a football team, no accounting for some peoples tastes

Btw.......it's probably deemed ok to hate Garcia, the same way people hate tiger, or monty, or Faldo, or poulter, for no real reason.......just not Rory eh ;)

Colin Jackson is...............Welsh!

And Gabby Logan's father is Welsh and her husband is Scottish.

It's funny you should mention Garcia because I was thinking the same thing. I really like Garcia, despite all his tantrums and post round comments. And was really rooting for him in the open and last week against Rory.

In reality I don't see much difference between him and Rory in that regard. But for some reason I just like Sergio. Don't know why really. I just do.

I don't dislike Rory, certainly don't hate him.

I'm not able to watch clip as at work, but you refer to Gabby Logan and Colin Jackson. Erm... Aren't both of these Welsh???

So why are they acting like this?! The commentator was Scottish, why would he have taken any pleasure in it?!

Edit - btw I didn't know Colin Jackson was Welsh, its unbelievable he'd be so flippant about it knowing as an athlete how hard it was on the girls

He was reacting in a slightly humorous way to Andrew Cotter (who was not taking any pleasure in it) who said that Wales were disqualified. After that he stated that as a Welshman he really felt for them.

Seriously, I think only the professionally offended can get upset about that.
