I don't get it.
Nipped into the clubhouse last night, there were a bunch of guys round a table taking digs at Rory because he'd just bogied a hole. They were almost gleefully happy to see him doing badly.
I also get this from a few other people I know (not golf related chums), they really hate him blaming things "off course" for their vitriol.

Personally I think he's been a breath of fresh air for the sport in since he came onto the scene, I don't really give a hoot who he chooses to sponsor him, what clubs he uses :blah:

Anyway, I feel better now I've got that off my chest

Spoke to someone about why they didn't like him and they explained that it was down to things he said about the Open and Ryder cup a few years ago. I not sure how long ago these statements were but he was only a young lad, and still is.

Personally I think he is great for the game and love watching him like I did when Tiger first burst on to the scene.

When he was a teenage he said some thing about the RC - not for him - he is about the personal glory etc but obviously as he grew up a little he realised it was a silly statement to make and as you can tell by the last two RC he loves it and has matured into a plesant young man with a lovely golf game

When he 1st burst on the scene, I just thought........WOW.......!!
Amazing talent
The next big superstar

(A little bit like above)
Then I lost all respect for him after he sat there and cried on like a baby about the weather at The Open, and how he didn't like tournaments where the weather played such a big part in outcome, etc.........
Sounded like a pathetic spoilt little brat, and he, to me, was belittling our Major

I just think he was very very badly advised in the early days and had many stupid interviews and press conferences

A fantastic talent, an obvious superstar, where the sky's the limit, if he can just stay fit, in form, and on the right path

Pretty much everyone has sports personalities they dislike - I don't get it myself, almost all have been good guys when I've met them.

I've not met Rory but I was stood about five yards from him at Trump recently - he was great with anyone who approached him for a pic, autograph etc.

Its the mentality of people who are lacking in many ways , If the only thing you can wish upon someone is bad then keep it to yourself , we got a few on here having digs but that is life sadly and its something you can`t control , before anyone says I don`t hate tiger or his golf , i just question his manners .................move on

Why should Rory be any different to Tiger? The truth is, people like to dislike people, usually successful people, and often for quite baffling reasons. Why people care what these people are like off the course is a mystery to me.

All I want them to do is turn up and play great golf but many seem to want them to be a pillar of society as well. At the end of the day, we are all different and we deal with life and people in different ways. People seem to expect everyone with talent to act in a particular way and if they don't reach those expectations they are slagged off, it really doesn't make sense to me.

I'm fairly sure that if I was blessed with the talent of a top golfer, I wouldn't meet the expectations that many expect, I wouldn't want to spend hours signing autograph's after I'd knobbed it round and missed the cut and I certainly wouldn't want to be interviewed for TV - why would I then expect others to meet those expectations? And you can argue that these guys are given PR training to deal with it but if it doesn't come naturally it isn't going to come across that well.

I read in this months mag that Victor Dubuisson is getting stick from the French media because he is quiet and doesn't meet their expectations.

He has opinions and, unlike some manufactured personalities, he expresses them. I like his honesty but would question is it wise with the tabloids looking for anything they can twist.

Whilst he's walking the walk, he can talk as much as he likes.

There must be a bit of jealousy, a young bloke with all that talent, all that money, he clearly doesn't struggle with the ladies, winning tournaments left right and center. Some people find that a bit hard to swallow, and like to dig at his one or two bad holes or comments he made when he was a teenager so they feel a bit better about themselves.

I'm sure if we were all reminded of comments we made years ago we'd all feel very stupid!

Same with Tiger and Beckham and Rooney...

Irrational hatred seems to be the thing to do for people who cant form there own opinion.

Sad really...

Not for me. I enjoy watching some of the good golf but really have never warmed to the guy.

I'm sure that says a lot about me but I don't care. I don't get in to the hype, don't get me wrong he is a very good player but is he that much better than everyone else out there? People try to ram this notion down my throat a lot which gets boring pretty quick.

If he is the next big ambassador for the game I think he has a fair bit of growing up to do pretty quick too. Not sure he is really poster boy material but I'm sure he does carry a fair bit of interest with the ladies, just think of the shopping you could do with a bank account like his!

Yeah i think it's nice that he's always honest and i actually enjoy listening to his interviews as it's not the same pre scripted rubbish the rest of the pros give week in and week out.

It may give the press some ammunition at times but who cares when he's playing golf like he is.

Thanks Swinger, you've just demonstrated what I said it post #10 perfectly.

What he said

Just like Andy Murray. Say a few ill chosen things early in your career that are twisted by the press into a few bad headlines and half the English fans (and I do think this is a predominantly English trait) will hate you. Doesn't seem to matter how you conduct yourself afterwards, the damage is done and takes many years to undo.
