Rory dismisses Ryder Cup as an 'exhibition'

Not avery good attitude if hes going to make the squad!!

I like McIlroy...hes a future major winner for sure!

Mmmmm dangerous ground the young lad is treading on!
The Ryder Cup is an institution and is bigger then any individual golfer no matter how great they become (just ask Tiger). I think his Manager (Chubby Chandler?) will be having a private word with him.

I don't think it has been taken out of context. I saw the interview and he did dismiss it as an exhibition and not the be all for him. He said if he was struggling to qualify, he wouldn't try and sneak in an extra couple of tournaments.

He may well regret the interview when he looks back at it.

He could have been a little more subtle

In My opinion it sounds like a bit of arrogance showing through. getting in the lime light messes with ya head at a young age or any age depending on the person.. hope he is not a golfing version of lewis hamilton in that respect.

But the comments he has made will be frowned upon by many.

Interesting-possibly trying not to put himself under too much pressure in what has already been a massive year for someone so young, maybe trying to deflect attention away from himself.Saying that its not the be all and end all, however he could have chosen his words more carefully! In the end he has attracted more attention.Unless of course he could'nt really give a toss!!

Im pleased he is staying who he is and not becomming a clone of every other golfer when it comes to speaking out and saying what they really think and feel. Long may it continue.

I think there may have been something in Monte's 'options' comment at the end of the piece.

I dont like the idea
that anyone may have thoughts that he should'nt be chosen or that hes done a naughty thing because of the odd displeasing comment or honest opinion, yet there will be people who will think that.

Hes a great golfer,I dont care what he says about The RC, if he makes the grade he should be used regardless of what he says. Its about time we went for the best of the best in all sports rather than the occasional friend of a friend. ;)

Up to a point I think what he says is basically true. It is an exhibition match. There's no money at stake and no ranking points. From a "Professional" outlook he's right. If his goal is to win tournaments including Majorsthen the RC is a bit of a side show.

Not knocking RC at all by the way - its a big deal to a lot of people but I'm sort of with Rory on this one.

Spoken like a true youngster i.e. like a blithering idiot. As Monty said, he'll most likely think differently when he walks to that 1st tee on his first appearance and then he'll get it and most likely cheerfully retract these silly comments.

Learnt a media lesson and no real harm done. I'm pretty sure Monty will be pulling his plonker all afternoon tomorrow over it!

I saw the interview in full earlier and it hasn't been taken out of contaxt. I do feel the guy has made a faux pas and if he's in with a chance of qualifying may feel differently especially if some of those on tour that have played in the RC have a word with him.

As it goes I think he'll get in by right. Whether the US team then bring it up during the matches will be an interesting possibility.

I still think he is a prodigious talent but not the real deal yet despite the interest he is generating all over the world. I think if he can get this full season on the tour out of the way as well as the problems caused by zipping over to the US regularly as well he'll be able to take stock next season, see where his heart is for which tour he plays and once he gets a settled schedule he'll start to grow in stature and wins

I think that the RC is an aquired taste. Once he has played in one, he will want to be a part of the next one. Til you have done it, I bet you really have no idea how addictive it is. (unless, like us you dream of it, but have no chance of ever doing it).

Be interesting what his view is in 20 years time.

hee will probably change his mind next week and say er.. what i mean is i wanna concentrate on my solo performance for now!......the ryder cup is THE biggest event in golf so im sure he will get quizzed.

What a balls-up.

He's just gone down miles in my estimation.....

Majors are about self satisfaction (and money?), I don't blame anyone wanting to challenge for as many as possible.

The RC is about pride in beating the Americans.....

Shame on Rory......

Everyone should make their millions, put their name on the map of history, and then spank the yanks!!!!

At least have an original thought because I believe Tiger made the same comment a few years ago.

I am a massive fan of the RC and love the fact that what is, in essence, a selfish sport becomes a genuine team game. The pressures on singles day must help any golfer going down the stretch on a Major - what Tour event could say the same.

His comments were disrespectful to the previous successful and unsuccessful European teams but he is young and he will learn.

Final point - if he does qualify, we want players who are 100% up for defeating the USA. We do not want a Euro 'Tiger' given his attitude and disappointing record in the competition.

What a stupid comment, it should be an honour and a privelege to be a Ryder Cup team member - not a point in the ten year career plan. What are his team mmbers going to think of him if he does qualify?
