What's the difference between a swindle and a roll-up?
I always thought they were two names for the same thing.

For me - a swindle is where it’s a bunch of guys who play together week in week out - arrange groups before hand and then book times and turn up

A roll up is where there is a set time blocked and anyone can turn up and enter

A swindle is closed and a roll up open. Is that right? Is one mans swindle another mans clique?

There were roll-up roll-ups pre-Covid. I did play in the early Saturday morning one for a few years through the winters.
Post Covid the same groups have to arrange everything on whatsapp as we have stayed with full booking system. Fastest finger first.

There was an announcement a few years ago that "..it has been decided..." that we would go back to some unbooked tee times.
Then there was great clamour for a club wide vote on it.
Large majority in favour of keeping full booking system.

I will put my name down to make up a four, or if there is a space, but don't pay money into any whatsapp group. There are a few others like me.
These groups seem more cliquey than they used to be as a result of post Covid changes. Some have cliques within cliques.
Not a problem. Everyone gets along somehow and accepts how we all want to play golf.
It is a fairly un-stuffy club in that respect.
We have loads of comps through the main season including a weekly weekday medal from April to September. This has an Order Of Merit throughout the year.
And plenty of team matches for all abilities, first team, second team, social team, mixed team, seniors team etc. I think the rabbits team died a death as it was mainly the same as the seniors team. The under-35 team went the same way due to lack of support/demand.
Not much need for roll-ups during the summer as there are plenty of other games and the full booking system means you can stick your name down with anyone for a game (mini roll-up)

I was just going off your description in # 22. That sounds closed to me. Maybe they are all similar and it is just different terminology 🤷‍♀️

Our “swindles” vary from 8 guys just playing each week to bigger groups where people can jump in on a tee time or give the organiser a shout to join in with them - all are very welcoming bar one

We have a swindle on a Tuesday and one on a Thursday. The club automatically reserve the 09:24 - 10:20 slots for them (8 slots). Roughly anyway, these slots may change slightly from time to time.

We also have a group that play together on the weekend when there is no club competition on (and Bank Holidays), and most of them play in the competitions as well. So, if there is a weekend day with no competition on, the club automatically reserve about 7-10 slots for them. This time of year, they are booked in from about 10am or just before. I think it is from around 11am in the summer.

This weekend group can be a bit more controversial. I've no issue with it, as I still always get to go out earlier. However, it is not a group that is open to all members, they only play amongst themselves. So, it might mean some members might not be able to play on a busier day. I think bank holidays have been most controversial, as it is usually busier then.

But, I think the club look to do a good job in looking after the members, including long established groups who give reliable income over the years in terms of membership, bar purchases, etc

I always thought they were two names for the same thing.
I assumed swindles and roll ups were also the same thing as well. Just organised events for multiple golfers outside the clubs official competitions. I just thought some people called them swindles, and others called them roll-ups.

And to complicate things even further, our club calls the Tuesday and Thursday ones "fiddles". I've heard others call them fuddles. I assumed that was a spelling mistake, until I noticed they continually called them fuddles.

Golf is complicated

We have two Roll Ups, Tuesdays and Thursdays late mornings, when 5 tees are pre booked. It is open to all members and one lady regularly plays on a Thursday. The Club will encourage new members to use it as a way of integrating them into the club - seems to work well.

No to preferred tee times as they are organised by the members.

Yes to mixed in some of them.

Most of them are by 'invitation' simply because of fastest finger first and getting enough tee times. One of the ones I play in I have to check on the day to see if anybody has cancelled.

I'm a bit of a fan for booked rollups. It's a great way to get new people involved since they might not know people....then can later branch out to play with people they have met.

-The argument against booked rollups.....everybody should have access to those times. They do....they can play in the rollup. The issue is they can't play the way THEY want to play (with just their buddies) so they consider it unfair.
-Argument against booked rollups....yet the club books large slots for visiting parties, comps, ladies day, Opens, business days, etc etc.....sounds like the club is fine for booked tees for a heck of a lot of things...why not rollups?

Every Tuesday and Thursday we have a fuddle between 9.36 and 10.16. Anything between 14 and 20 odd lads. This week we had 14 Tuesday and 17 today. We have had two leave in the last month. 1 coz he was a cheat and was called out. One because he was a self centred plank. Thing is we are a wide ranging group of good lads that hit it off. We stay afterwards and Chuck a few quid behind the bar. I know a few members have had a moan about us having the same tee times every week. But we book them, the club don’t reserve them. During the winter months, a fair few members will be nowhere near the course.
The club have tried to shoe horn a few new members into our fuddle, but they don’t help us with tee times and we have said point blank that if we have to many fuddle members turn up. The first being told there is no space is the newbies. Suffice to say they don’t send anymore.

Yes we do - many through the week inc non-comp Saturdays.
Yes/No - some get allocated tee times, some do not and have to organise to book tees to play as a group.

The Saturday one I play in has recently its long standing late morning tees times reduced in number and shunted back to later in the morning. It’s controversial and recently subject to a lot of debate - and anger towards the main committee from many of the members of the rollup. Lots of pros for many, as well as cons for those who dont want to play in it
