Roll Back Discussion

If the powers that be really want to protect the game and bring a better balance between absolute distance v. accuracy and skill - make inaccurate distance punitive by setting up the 0.001% of courses that host professional golf with tighter fairways and longer rough.
The 2020 US Open illustrated why this approach is counterproductive and only increases the advantage of the longest hitters. Everyone will miss fairways but it's much easier to hit a wedge than a 6-iron out of long rough and reach the green.

I can probably live with 3 to 5 yards. By the time the changes come in I might have a new set of irons where the 7 iron is 25 degrees anyway. 😄 And of course a new driver will earn me 4 more yards anyway.

Get better at the short game....simples....
One thing in golf that really does annoy me is people who moan when they can't reach a par 5 in 2 shots....welcome to the Real world.
I don't really understand why many average golfers believe they have some kind of right to be able to reach a long par 4 in 2 shots. Par is just a word. We're handicap golfers because our distance and accuracy and all round ability is not elite.

I see this change making absolutely no difference to me or my scores. My dispersion on length varies more than 5 just in strike.

There’s 1 par 5 I can’t get on in 2 at our place, the other 3 I can.

Do we really think that 9-11 yards will make a real difference to Tour players?
Average approach shot on the PGA Tour is 175 yards. So now it will be 185-190 yards. The difference between a soft 8 iron for Will Zalatoris and a full one. Brooks Koeopka hit a 190 yard uphill 9 iron onto 18th wining the PGA at Oak Hill this year. Eddie Pepperell reckons (on this weeks TCF) that Rory usually would only use a 5 iron to approach a green in reg once per round and that would be a very long Par 3 - I can’t imagine him wearing out his mid irons in future.
Hardly a game changer.

As a somewhat portly, short, inflexible, 50 something bloke who, on a good day on a dry fairway in the summer, can sometimes bunt the ball out there some 260yds but at most times of the year will carry it around 210yds and see it roll anything from zero to 25 yards futher....this change will make not one iota of difference to me.

My drives, as they are today, will still be far more impacted by that sudden gust of wind, or an unpredictable bounce, or my mate John absent mindedly jingling his back pocket change at the top of my backswing.

In fact i'll tell you something....theres a tree 200yds off the first tee at my course on the left edge of the fairway....I aim at this tree as I hit a slight fade....on the rare occasions that I nut one in a straight line then my ball carries straight into the middle of the canopy....knock a few yards off my drive and my ball may just hopefully drop short and fly under the branches and roll beyond the tree. Hell....that's a win for me. Thank you ruling bodies for your help.

It's a monumental waste of time, and money.

At least it makes golf continue to look stupid to those outside the game, we wouldn't want that threatened would we....

That is his real world!

Why should we all play the game the same way?

It might mean they are one club longer into the green, but for them hitting a 6 iron instead of a 7 iron makes zero difference, whereas for me it's chalk and cheese.

Seems like a lot of short hitters think the roll back is great. Maybe there is a bit of green eyed monster involved 🤷🏼‍♂️

We don't
We shouldn't
But he's moaning about losing 10 yards when, by his own words, his short game is terrible....well he's got 6 years to get better at it...
He might get better than Scratch then....

If us recreational golfers are going to lose 5 yards or less, what is the point?
Am I going to buy new golf balls to replace the dozens out in my garage (no)
As it is, I find many more balls than I loose.
Really can't understand why this wasn't just applied to the professional game only.
A very strange & wrong decision.

Because the likes of Titleist have too much power I expect. They kicked up a fuss because they want to be able to sell us the same ball that Rory etc are using. Well this is what we get.

I do fully imagine this is a first step, and opens the door pretty easily to some more changes down the line

I couldn't care less about it. It makes no practical difference to me (as I always knew it wouldnt) in terms of how far I hit the ball and, in practice, I doubt very much whether it will ultimately have much impact on the professional game when you see players hitting 180yd 9 irons.

A lot of angst and handwringing about not very much.

I used the words "storm in a teacup" a few days back

Looks like a decent prediction. It doesn't look like a huge impact on pro game, so I suggest this is the first of several such interventions.
By the time it’s implemented, every major ball manufacturer will have figured out how to make a ball that passes the test, but goes further under other conditions.

It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if Titliest were able to put a ball into production tomorrow that could.

I think this the pragmatic approach. It doesn't actually change the pro game too much and puts a process in place to use as required.

It also gives those on here who are self loathing, something to moan about!🤣🤣
