Roll Back Discussion

Interesting one about the “ forgiveness of drivers”
monitoring this ??
IMO this is the biggest tech advance in the last few years and almost dwarfs the distance gains.
You can mostly hit it anywhere on the face without much distance loss.
This explains why someone can drive the ball well but the rest of their game is poor.
Without doubt.....we all know that shots from the middle have been going roughly the same distance for some time now.
The progress has all been on off centre strikes that , in many cases, can be almost as efficient as centred ones

I was thinking earlier when the ban comes in what exactly happens to all the old balls currently out there?

Say the ban is 2026 they must have to produce so many new balls for the pros and the shops

What happens to all the ones in people's garages etc and on the courses

Do they get binned ?

We are protecting the courses but creating a bit of environmental waste no?

I'm not quite getting my head around the fact that they will mess with balls to stop the big boys hitting them further but the difference to us is minimal. How is that happening? How is my slap unaffected but their smoosh is reigned in?

If the ball I use is unaffected, let's say low / mid range product, why would a pro not use the same one? Is that because they want the added control of spin that their ball gives them?

Can anyone explain in simply terms?

Unless you happen to use one of the 30% of balls that may still conform.. then no change I guess? Would be nice to see a list of which balls they are, I might switch early and get used to them. 😆

Keep your eyes peeled here...in about 4 years time

Not sure I am convinced that, given the head start they have before the rules come in, the manufacturers will not have developed a way to negate any loss in distance. I would be fairly convinced that, as they have known that this is coming, they are not already well on the way down that route.

So, ALL golfers will be affected detrimentally to an as yet unknown and untested % just to accommodate the 0.001% of mainly professional golfers who genuinely hit it 300+ yards?

Talk about a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Aiming for a roll back of 15 yards in the professional game in 5 years time is not worth it. Clubhead and shaft technology and extra visits to the gym will negate those 15 yards without a doubt.

If the powers that be really want to protect the game and bring a better balance between absolute distance v. accuracy and skill - make inaccurate distance punitive by setting up the 0.001% of courses that host professional golf with tighter fairways and longer rough.

Honestly how many courses are overpowered by amateur golfers in the monthly medal? You only have to read the many threads on here about how badly done to low handicappers are to know that.;)

Compression looks like a decent way of doing it.
From looking at this... https://www.todays-golfer.com/equipment/best/golf-ball-robot-test-2023/ most balls go a similar distance for slow and medium speed swingers. For faster swing speeds, there's a distance drop off with softer balls. Harder balls go further.
I know you played(ed) cricket. Think of the reaction of a proper cricket ball coming off a bat compared to the softer ones that younger kids use.
A tapped proper ball goes nowhere but a big hit is out of the ground.
Juniors balls bounce off the bat pretty well with even a gentle tap but a massive slog struggles to reach the boundary even on a reduced size pitch.
Far from a perfect analogy, but a similar principle.

Terrible argument.

there is a sustainability aspect at play. Growing rough takes more water, more fertiliser. It’s also not just the PGA tour that would be affected. all courses on all tours around the world. All with varying growing seasons and weather.
Not to mention the detriment to the amateur golfers who then get affected by longer rough whilst it grows that they may not have the power to get out of.
it also provides more advantage to the long hitters who can just bomb it and then hit shorter clubs in anyway

just read that article by Fergus Bissett.."Why Universal Golf Ball Rollback Is Like Using A Wrecking Ball To Crush An Ant"....

a selected quote....

My low handicap is principally protected by the fact I can hit the ball a good distance off the tee and so reach long par-4s and the odd par-5 in two. My short game is terrible, so I need to be up there and putting to have a chance of regularly making pars, (the occasional birdie.) If I’m going to reach a % fewer greens in regulation or better, I can only see my scores going up.

There are a couple of par-5s at my club that measure around the 520-yard mark. I can just about reach them in two with a Sunday best drive of 285 and an approach with a fairway wood of 235… Take 4% off my drive, as that’s roughly what it looks like I will be losing as per 2030... (so now 274) and off my second (now 226) – I'll be 20 yards short… Rather than putting for eagle, I’ll face a delicate pitch (not my strength) and will be struggling for par! This change will not be good news for me, I can tell you that for a fact Rory.

I’m sure, I’m not alone – How many of us can occasionally scrape it onto the front edge of that short par-4 at our home club? Maybe not anymore… That is going to hamper my enjoyment of golf.

What a pathetic whinge bag.

Get better at the short game....simples....
One thing in golf that really does annoy me is people who moan when they can't reach a par 5 in 2 shots....welcome to the Real world.
