Retirement

Also, it depends on how old you are. The value at birth in Scotland is 76, but that takes account of all sorts of early years mortality risks, and for young men a period of dangerous driving and dubious lifestyles.
By the time you're the age of the average forum member and have put all that behind you, even the average Scottish male makes it to around 83.
I suspect its higher elsewhere, but I can't be bothered to check the stats!
And then of course there is the "healthy years" left stats, but they're a whole other can of worms.

Interestingly "Scotland continues to have the lowest life expectancy of other UK countries"

I blame it on the soft water...that's used to make whisky...

Actually only half joking as I believe (based upon something I heard or read some years ago) that the softness of the Scottish water might be a contributing factor to health issues in Scotland. May of course be complete rubbish and I've misremembered something about the water. Anyway - I think it was the Calton district of Glasgow that not so long ago had an average life expectancy for males of 69.

Interesting, I would have thought 76 to 78 is not a big issue, 76 to 83 seems to be significant unless there is some key demographic reason/issue that I am not aware of.
Is it that there are relatively fewer people out of work/on benefits/have no real home/lower paid etc in England than elsewhere in the UK?

In all seriousness, this is as good an example as I can think of for the "correlation is not causation " meme.

I read somewhere back in the mists of time that mortality is linked to wealth, or the lack of it. More money = eat well. Less money = a fish supper.

I was listening to a programme on the radio the other day and an employer there said when she started paying her employees the real living wage, she actually noticed that they started to eat better. So a benefit for her and a benefit for her employees.

You clearly haven't bought a fish supper in the UK recently. Nothing cheap about that any more, hasn't been for some time. I do get your point though.

I was shocked how much pub food had gone up on my last visit early this year, the overall cost of living has sky rocketed.

I caught the train to visit a friend on the IOW from East Grinstead area, crazy price, plus the cost of petrol is double to what it is here, someone is making a killing.

If it’s more than a tanner… eeh I can remember queuing up at the chippie near my gran’s in South Bank and paying 11d for fish and chips - that’s 4p in new money. 4p wouldn’t get you the plastic fork these days.
