• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Relocating to Oz through work,

I was sorely tempted to go when the £10 one way scheme was introduced and regretted not taking it up for many years.
Go for it: good luck and remember there's Skype!!

don't think about what your leaving behind, if you do you'll have a bad day in the office and regret the move.

i'd be asking about salary and relocation costs, factor in the cost of living and two return flights a year then try and work out if your standard of living would improve or be the same.

for me i'd be off on the next plane if i had the chance, although convincing the other half would be a bigger issue.

Why?

The big question is Bazza, will they throw in a chartered 747 to transport all of your golf gear? If not, will the for sale section on here be able to handle the additional traffic? :D

And we must have a game before you go!

Matt

Edit: And all the best with it - I would go for it if I were you.

I work for a company that has had people relocating to various countries (mostly the US) and the main cause of it not working out are the other halves. Check that your other half can get work pretty easily as some countries (for example this used to be the case in the US) will not allow other halves to get a job that a native could have, and you have to get some form of sponsorship from your company to get a job there.

So what happened whilst the person with a job was having the time of their lives, was the other halves went a bit stir crazy, especially the highly qualified ones, as they were reduced to mostly being stay at home housewives (as they were mostly women). Which was great for a few months, but then the appeal fades a bit once you get more used to the lifestyle and it becomes less of a holiday and more of every day life but a bit sunnier.

Also go into it with your eyes open about the country and the issues it has. Many people go on about Britain going to the dogs, too many immigrants, kids have no respect, hooded youths, people not standing in the right place when you tee off etc etc. But a lot of countries have very similar issues.

But having said this there have also been plenty of successes and the families have loved it a move abroad. And I have a mate who has been on secondment in Melbourne for 2 years and loved every minute of it, but then again he is single.

Also be careful of the remoteness of Oz as, apart from the distance for the UK, the cities are a hell of a long way from each other with not much in between. Only visited a few cites but Sydney and Melbourne were fantastic, Perth good but a bit remote, not sure I'd want to live anywhere else though.

Assume Queensland = Brisbane.

If so I can't really see a problem and for those of us who like it warm I'd take Brisbane over Melbourne any time.

Bazza,

Don't forget to mind them beasties, such as the box jellyfish and the taipan. Then there's the blue ringed octopus and the salty crocs, not forgetting the funnel web spiders! Oh, and mind the stonefish and red backs. The brown snake and the great white shark are pretty fierce too! Then theres the tiger snake.

Struth mate - stick to Croydon - the only danger are the people and they only come out a night!

PS - wouldnt show this to Mrs Bazza if I were you!:D

I had the chance to go in 1966 when I first got married but I bottled it and stayed here. What a bad year that turned out to be I'm still being reminded of it . My 3rd last wife's two brothers and their families moved down under in 64 and 65 and they have no regrets, they come back for the odd holiday. Que Sera Sera best of luck cobber.

Cheers for all of the feed back guys, I'm trying to go in open minded and not with rose tinted glasses, will know more after the 15th of few, will keep everyone posted and thankyou for your kind words

Don't get too excited over the kind words Baz, it's only that a bunch of us want to claim to be extended family and relocate after you!

Regarding hard work to settle in that's not something I'm afraid of, as it stand half way through out financial year I'm almost 40% clear of the second place account manager in our region which is made up of around 40 branches, and currently 13th in the country from over 500 account managers, them numbers don't come from being last in and first out ;)

Modest as well eh ;)

will you regret it if you don't take the chance?

Moving with a company that already rates you is the best way to do it imo.

I would keep your house here (rent it out) until you are convinced you will be emigrating, we all need a safety net.

I would be more comfortable if your company puts in writing what will happen if you dont want to stay and will there be a role for you back here gauranteed? or will that ship have sailed as they will need to replace you in the UK

Takes cahonies to make such a big move, but feint heart never won anything

Good luck to you and your family my friend , I hope it works well for you. I don't know what the Aussie beer is like but when you are settled raise a glass to us poor sods back at home on the forum. I don't know who's quote it is but " the future belongs to those who see change as opportunity" seems appropriate for your new adventure.
