Hi

Just wondering what ranking of importance you would place on each competition at the club.
I would have thought it went;

Club Championship > Club Matchplays > Monthly Medals > Named Trophies on non medal weeks > Standard Voucher comps

I always see mention of "board competitions" on here. What are they specifically??

Cheers

J

To be honest, nearly ant comp that affects my handicap is of equal importance, the club championship and some big opens are probably more important as its nice to put up a good performance in these.

As for board competitions they are any where the winners name goes on a board in the clubhouse. At some clubs, mine included, they are what you refer to has Named trophies. Other clubs may only have a board for the club champion.

For some reason I always get knocked out of the Matchplay in the first round (this year included already) so for me the competition ranking is quite a simple one:

Sunday mornings where I'm not hungover > Sunday mornings where I am hungover

Unfortunately I play in more of the later...

The Club Championship has to be top of the list. We have three Meetings in the season, which are our Majors or Board Comps (although we don't do boards up here ;) ) then it's down to Monthly Medals and anything else on the card.

We have 4 major board comps where you have to qualify for the final in one of a number of qualifying rounds. Top two would be the Captains and Presidents Prize comps then the other two. After the "Majors" there are a few minor board comps. Knock-outs aren't considered that big a comp really. Our Club Champion is the player with the best 4 gross scores across all of it. Prestigious but not really a comp you go out and win on the day.....and the format means there are only a handful with a chance anyway.

For us, the monthly medal, whether it be stroke play or stableford, would likely be bottom of the list because you don't get a trophy for winning the monthly medal. You do get entry into the Jubilee cup though for which there is a trophy to collect during presentation evening.

Most other comps have a trophy to collect so would be deemed more worthy of winning I would have thought.

Club Championship and the Scratch Cup are the two most prestigious at my place.

Then in terms of handicap comps we have the Handicap Championship and Midweek Championship.

The singles, pairs and mixed pairs are all board comps (as are obviously all of the above). Then I guess the next most sought after are the rest of the Trophy comps which are generally stablefords and then we have the medals which basically have no real benefit other than a few shekels in your account.

For me the captains day is the most important one.

Thats the one I have won :whoo:

We don't have "monthly medals" as such. In addition to the Club Championship, from April to September there is at least one singles comp each month with a nice (usually old) named trophy which will get your name on a board in the club house. Captain's Day and President's Bowl have highest status but other than that I'm not aware that there is any particular ranking. There's also an order of merit type trophy based on points awarded for these events.

There are also match play knock outs played over the year (scratch, and 3 h/cap KOs one each for h/caps up to 12, 13-20 and 20+) these are fairly prestigious. Then few 4BBB or foursomes events, some of which also have lovely old trophies.

Other than that there are regular mid-week comps (medals and s/ford) played off the white tees and regular seniors comps played off the yellow tees.

Im surprised medals would rank so low. From a course setup point of view the course is always setup the longest and toughest on those days and it is the truest test of golf.

At our place the medal winners each get a lovely medal at the prize giving.

In my mind I would have placed them above all the Joe Bloggs memorial trophies (unless I happened to know joe myself).

If it's a qualifier it's equal, I don't bother with knockouts apart from the scratch trophy which generally ends in a first round defeat

Club Championship is most prestigous , 36 holes over 2 days ( top 21 gross qualify for day 2).

There are then a few more board comps and as we are a public course there's the NAPGC qualifiers as well which are always good fun. Regional finals and then the grand finals at St. Andrews and Woodhall Spa.

I rank the club Championship as the biggest but only to win the over all gross. Anything else on the day not the same. Ours played over two days. Can get into top ten but that's it lol not good enough

The named trophys I don't rat no one looks at them from one year to the next.

Also I do love a stroke comp off back sticks something more satisfying winning a stroke over a s/fold comp.

The ones I'd want to win I don't qualify for, and I don't give a stuff about the others.
Why do I want my name inscribed on a plank in the bar?

Club Championship (scratch) and scratch matchplay. All the rest are for hackers!

i haven't won either, nor likely to.

i think like most it is the club champs that get the most prestige ,and my club is no different. i have won the club champs ,but unfortunately it was the h/cap side of the comp .my name still went on the board though .after the CC its the kO singles then the pairs .after that its the two other board comps then the monthly medals.
