Hi all,

My mates ball was on the green, I putted from off the green and hit his ball, stopping mine dead and knocking his ball closer.

I thought it was a two shot penalty for him for not marking his ball but he said I was not on the green so it did not count.

I dont really care about the 2 shots less I was ment to get them but do we just then play both balls as they lie?

Thanks

Al

(What I wanted to do was kill him but thats just not golf and it may be me at fault?!) :o

If you're off the green then I believe there is no penalty and the balls are played from where they end up.

I'm more than happy to be corrected though......... :)

No penalty if you were off the green, you putt from where your ball stopped he replaces his ball.

Now if you are both on the green and you hit his ball when putting you get the penalty not him.

I think your opponents ball is replaced back to where it was before yours hit it, and your ball is played from where it came to rest. No penalty

As previous your mate needs to replace the his ball obviously as close as possible to original position

Also as mentioned if you were both on the green it would have been you getting the penalty not your mate

nm, beaten to it :)

it seems that you must replace your ball to where it was at impact but your opponent plays there ball from where it lies. only if both are on the green is it a 2 stroke penalty

This would be my understanding of it also. There is a bit in the rules though about if you have a ball left near the pin without it being marked. You can be seen to have colluded to use this as a bit of a 'stopper' in case you overhit your shot. In this case there would be a penalty I think , maybe even dq ?

Thanks guys, I think its a very unfair rule but life is full of them. His ball got in the way of my ball and there should be another system in place to work that out, if anything he should take the penalty for getting in the way of a ball in play imo.

:o

Ill get him to mark it next time.

If you were on or off the green and hit his ball it was either a poor shot or you should have been aware you could hit his ball - either way, your fault, hence your penalty (only if you were on the green)

You always ask another player to mark his ball if you think that you will hit it!

Other way round G1BBO!

If you were off the green, YOU play your ball from where it ends up. YOUR OPPONENT replaces his ball to where it was before it was hit. :D

Eh...what....I think I'll play my shot, oh wait, there's another ball in the way....I'll play anyway. Unfair.

how is it unfair ?? if it in your way you could & should have asked him to mark it & if marker was in your way YOU can ask for it to be moved ...for some reason you chose not to do this so only yourself to blame man

Chris it was a really poooooor shot :o

Not sure why this rule is being considered unfair.

There there is a ball on your line and it's on the green you ask for it to be marked. If you don't get a ball mark and you then move it with your ball it's a penalty for either not asking for the mark or for pulling off a poor shot so you hit a ball way off your line.

You can't penalise the other player, his ball is on your line but he didn't put your ball in it's unfortunate position - you did. That's kind of like saying you don't like where bunkers are if they are between your ball and the cup. (Albeit that bunkers don't move)

Just a couple of points arising ......

Players A and B are playing matchplay and both have balls on the green. Player A putts and hits his opponent's ball.

No penalty in matchplay.

As previously said though, Player A plays his ball from where it comes to rest. Player B replaces is ball to the position it was in before it was hit.

If two players agree to leave a ball in place to maybe act as a "backstop". That is a penalty, whether or not the ball is hit.
