I recently downloaded the Nike 360 app and decided to input my stats for a round. The course is a par 70 that was very wet and that I had never played before. I went around in 91 but the main thing that was noticeable to me was that I had 42 putts (including a few tiddlers).

Putting is definitely the weakest part of my game but I thought that was a pretty alarming number. I would be curious to hear how many putts per round people expect or average.

it depends on my approach play massively, miss greens and i hope to wedge fairly close for a single putt, hit greens but leave long putts expect at least 2 putts. so all in all, as an average, i aim to hit sub 33 putts. would love to get that under 30!

My target is 30.. If it rises to 32 then I'm not overly bothered. I have had a round with 24 putts but still scored worse than the following week with 31.. The number of putts is not the whole story of a round.. But 40+ is still high.. On a positive note, it's one of the easiest skills to practice and improve on.. Good luck:thup:

Statistics can be misleading. If you have a crap round & chip & putt a lot your putting stats look great. If you hit every green you can easily have 36 or more putts. I think the real measure of how well you putted is the total length of putts holed, or perhaps the average length of putt holed. Does anyone measure that on the PGA or European tours?

Well anything over 36 is pretty concerning and is certainly something to work on, but a full putting analysis really needs an idea of how long all your first putts were (I'm a big fan of the strokes-gained putting stat). The reason is simple - the number of putts you should expect to have depends almost entirely on the length of your first putt. If all your first putts are from 3 feet and you have 30 putts then you've putted very poorly. If they were all from 30 feet, then you have putted brilliantly.

Putts per round can be a little misleading as this can easily go down as you hit more greens as you could be facing linger putts where as if scrambling and getting up and down you can then chip closer giving you shorter putts.

I did read on here once about counting the distance of putts made and the greater this value the longer putts you are holing, this could give a much better value.

A good example of this is a 12 capper I played with once never made a green all day but scrambled really well hence had very few putts, i'm not saying he was a bad putter but he was giving himself a chance every hole as he was normally only facing a putt under six foot.

I've been using the Nike 360 app for a year now and I'm averaging 36 pts per round. Total rounds 55.
would like to get to 33/34.

I average about 32 putts per round. However the greens at our course are usually pretty good which helps. I generally like to have more 1 putts than 3 putts. :)

I would be a little less hard on myself at the moment. Given the recent conditions and the state of the greens, it may not be a true figure. If in a month or so when they are truer and starting to run quicker I would suggest a lesson and get the basics checked and make sure the stroke is working properly

Putts per GIR is a better metric.

I use Putts minus GIR - and there's a slight difference for what is good/great/bad/terrible for each of the courses I play.

:) Hi , 42 putts is a lot , 30 putts a round is the mark you should be looking at , 36 putts a round is par , now do you count putts on the greens or do you count every time you use the putter around the green , I count putts on the greens only , I always give myself a few mins after rounds to do my stats , most important are GIR , Putts taken , Sand saves , up and downs , I don't worry to much about fairways hit , I also go through my scorecard and do what if I done this or that ,like club or shot selections , would I have scored better and more times then not I do , same with putting , was I poor on short ones or was my lag putting poor hence leaving too many 4 or 5 footers , then I go and have a pint , if the results are the same for most rounds then you know what you must work on to improve ............................................. :)

Ditto. Putting is the weakest part of my game as well. I probably 3-stab about 3-4 times a round, seriously. To be fair I know why, I simply don't work enough on it, I hope to change that this year.

Nothing more soul destroying than putting for a birdie and walking off with a bogey.:(

Does that include putting from the fringe or are they only counted when on the green? because this seems to be a split decision for amateur golfers whether they count or not

If you look at the PGA Tour Stats 50th place which is a good bench mark gives an average of around 1.75 putts a round. That equates to 31.5 putts a round, however there are quite a few well known pro's who average closer to 32.

If you are getting within 4 shots of a pro i.e. under 36 puts you're not doing too badly.
