Putting with the flag in the hole

Played yesterday on a course with those metal lifter uppers which fit around the flag. I had a putt hit one of the two metal rods attached & bounce out. After that I made sure the rods were at right angles to my putts & didn't have any further problems.

How did it hit the two rods? They are normally on different sides of the stick although most/many only have one rod.

Agree that the staff have done wonderful jobs. The pool noodle foam on our course is about 1/2 inch below the "cup", not 1/2 inch below the green surface. The "cup" is normally set one inch below the surface of the putting green. That makes the foam about 1 1/2 inches below the surface of the putting green. I've played about 20 rounds, in groups of four, since the pool noodles were installed and have not seen any ball "bounce" out of the hole or be unduly rejected.
One of my Tuesday evening buddies had a 70yd pitch bounce out of the hole off a foam insert...it would have been a nice eagle. He got the birdie.

From that distance can you be absolutely sure it actually went into the hole?

The other two of us were standing much closer to the green and we saw it bounce in (second bounce) and 'ping' back out :) So by the way it bounced we were pretty sure - though couldn't be 100%

We had those for a couple of weeks and now switched to the plastic version without wires.

Lot of extra time on the green with the wired ones as every player made sure the wires were in the correct alignment to stop the ball bouncing off them.

One of the troubles we found with the foam inserts was that they floated when the hole had water in.

Ha ha I'm with Rulefan...
From 70 yards out, saying that it was down to the foam that the ball didn't go in is pure speculation.
We were standing about 20yds from the front edge green and looking slightly down on it...I was unsure - my buddy was 100% certain. It really didn't look like a shot that hit the edge of the hole as it bounced pretty much straight back up in the air.

Very coincidentally four holes later I holed out for an eagle from about the same distance. Difference being my ball landed on the green and after a couple of bounces rolled very gently and sweetly into the hole.

Played Meltham last week, they had a very simple and effective method to stop the ball hitting the bottom of the cup. It was a piece of 34/40mm waste pipe cut to approx 100mm in length, pipe wall approx 5mm thick. Flag in the middle of the pipe. It must have cost at least £2 to fit out all eighteen holes.

We been running as above but have had issues with ball bouncing back off the ferrule at the bottom of the flag. On the above yesterday it happened twice from 6 inches, greenkeepers seem to sit the holes at different heights which doesn't help.
We've been trialling two sorts of lifters but neither had any great enthusiasm from the members so at Commitee meeting on Thursday decided to try the foam option from Monday

How did you get on with the Golf Genius?
It was very good. I scored all four players. It was very easy to use once the GGID codes were added. Our playing partners kept a card as well. The app helped sort their scoring errors that they incurred by mixing up our names! The app fell out once during the round but the message did say that the server had a temporary glitch.

One rather strange problem occurred which I have since resolved (I think) . When I entered a players score next to their name for each hole, only the middle third of the number appeared. I couldn’t sort it out on the course but I emailed Golf Genius the next day with a query. They responded immediately and whilst they hadn’t experienced it before they looked into it and within an hour came back with the suggestion that iPhones can do something similar if ‘zoom’ or ‘magnify’ options in the iphone settings had been enabled. And yes , I had recently enabled the ‘magnify’ setting ( it’s in Accessibility, General). Will check it out a Oakdale on Thursday. I was extremely impressed by Golf Genius support response and told them so. I will also let them know if their suggestion resolves the issue - though I am 99% confident it will do so.

Our course is similar set up to yours. After a week or so they somehow moved the ferrule down a little.
I would strongly recommend that you review the Meltham solution posted above.

Played in the YGU event today at Oakdale. I had the same issue with Golf Genius score entries. So my 99% confidence that it was sorted was woefully incorrect . Ticket raised with GG.
(the greens were fast! - it took most of the front 9 to get my head around the speed)

Very envious. It's too long since I've played there. A classy set up all round.

I have to agree. Played Pannal as well this week, both for the first time. Oakdale and Pannal are definitely good courses and as good as Lindrick, Moortown etc
Wow, great week for you. Throw in Knaresborough as well and you have a wonderful Harrogate based golf trip ?(I may well have done that a few times ?)
