Here are some of the figures..

Processor: Intel (R) Celeron(R) M CPU 440 @ 1.86GHz 1.87 GHz
Memory (RAM) :894MB
System type: 32-bit operating system

Capacity 69.1GB
Used 49.0GB
Free 20.0 GB

Pie chart looks about 75/25

Hope that helps Fragger.
Cheers

Well thats the reason why your PC is slow , You have a crappy Celeron processor( What were Intel thinking?), Vista (what were Microsoft Thinking) and 1 GB RAM

Why they sell these PCs to the public never fails to amaze me. It is a typical Cheap and nasty PC sold by PC World to unsuspecting members of the public.

You should have 2Gb Ram as an absolute minimum

You have 2 options

1) go to www.crucial.com/uk download the system scanner, run it. and order a 2Gb chip. PM me when it arrives and I can talk you through the physical fitting.
This will make a difference, but this machine will never set the world on fire

Option 2 Throw it out the window and get yourself a Windows 7 machine with a I3 /I5 CPU and 4GB RAM.

Sorry but when you get this combination of hardware / software I just want to weep

To be honest, I arent very technical in any way, and only ever 'had to be' when frickin Windows required me to try and fix it, ala where you're at right now !!

I took the plunge to Mac, a lovely 21" iMac, which is simply a revelation.
Its quiet, unobtrusive, and sleek, and took me perhaps a few days to get aquainted with the OS etc, but ever since, it just works, and does all need it to do, when I need it to, and how I need it to.
It really is that easy.

Windows is the biggest pile of sh1te, and seems pre-loaded with guidance on how to corrupt itself at every possible opportunity it seems.

*shakes head*

Dont spend another penny on anything to make yours 'run better', - you know the next problem is only weeks away.

Fragger is correct, Vista won't run on a PC with only 894mb of RAM, you need a minimum of 2,000mb (2 GIG) for it to even become respectful, probably more.

The best option is seriously to buy another PC, your alternatives are to add more RAM and/or back date your PC to WindowsXP.

If you take the 'buy another PC' option, GET SOME ADVICE from the forum! :)

Just an update. PC seems to be back to normal.

Buying a new laptop is currently not an option. I will instead buy some extra RAM (memory or whatever its correct name is).

What information do I need from the pc to make sure I buy the correct chip thingy.

Will this help speed up the pc. I mainly use it for watching music videos and surfing the net. The buffer speed for videos is brutal at the moment. Will more RAM help this.

Any idea how much these are?
Is an external hardrive an option or is that just for storing files etc and no help for spped.
Thanks again.

Is this the sort of thing I need?

As Fragger said above, you can go to the Crucial website and let them scan your computer and tell you what sort you need.

You don't have to buy from them.

Other considerations are checking what your laptop can take, in terms of how many and what size chips, and also that anything over 3gb will be wasted on a 32-bit computer (which I'd be fairly sure yours is).

It's true that hard drive space is used temporarily as 'virtual memory', but I don't think adding more would necessarily speed you up much, if at all. Fragger will know better than I.

Yeah, it doesn't look bad.

The thing that puzzles me though is from what it says about your system, specifically this...

Standard Memory: 1024MB non-removable

I wonder if 'non-removable' means you literally can't take it out?
Here my knowledge endeth.

Whether or not you can actually remove the module that's in there now, you 'might' only have to buy one. Like this http://www.ebuyer.com/product/119282

I've heard some people have had no problems installing another chip alongside an existing one, but then others that say it wouldn't run or recognise the extra memory unless they replaced them both.

Have to wait for a real expert I'm afraid.

I've no idea how much crap Advent pre-load their laptops with, but it might be a good idea to go through the list in add/remove programs to see if there's anything in there you definitely don't want/need, then you can remove it. You have to be sure though.

If you are unsure, googling the program name will usually find you lots of pages telling you exactly what it does.

I still say running a decent (and free) anti-spyware program is also a good idea, once you've sorted the rest out.

Well done 1 up to the experts.
Always said PC world are crap, and Microsoft wants to take control of the world.
Just need to wait until my 2GB upgrade arrives and then we shall be all singing and dancing again.
Thanks Phil.

You are going to have to physically take a look at your RAM sockets.

switch it off and close the lid and turn it upside down.

On the back will be a number of small access panels secured by small screws.

Unscrew a panel and look, DONT TOUCH
What you are looking for is a pair of RAM chips on top of each other, but slightly offset.

If you can see 2 chips then get the set that Crucial suggest.

But if you can only see 1 empty socket then it means that the Master RAM chip is soldered to the motherboard and cannot be removed.

In this case just order 1 x 1Gb chip.

and shout back before you install as there is a knack

Its Tough Being A Genius
