I’m with Craw on this one. I was surprised how quickly they got through holes.

It does appear though that Woods apparently was the slow player in their group - video of one of the players making a gesture

But let’s be honest - this has nowhere near the same level of intensity or competitive nature that you get in the Ryder Cup - it’s pretty much an “end of season” friendly compared to the Ryder Cup.

I actually think the Presidents Cup harms the USA chances in the Ryder Cup.

They play the Internationals every other year. There is no intensity and the International team is generally a much weaker team than they face in the Ryder Cup. The USA players have a relaxed week and generally win quite comfortably. They try a few pairings and they are generally successful. Then 16 months later they are playing the likes of McIlroy, Garcia, Stenson, Rose and Poulter etc. who've barely lost a pairs match in about 40 games between them.

If they didn't play the Presidents Cup, or if they only used it for a second tier of player, I think they would find it much easier to have a similar level of intensity at the Ryder Cup as the Europeans do.

I actually think the International Team looks pretty strong this time and they have plenty of Asian players who are well established on the PGA Tour and so will feel much more comfortable playing with these guys.

I think your second point is probably why it is a little quicker. Players care just a little less.

It also accounts for Woods being the slowest. His competitive edge is what's driven him to become the player his is. He's gonna take this as serious as he always woukd, maybe more so as Captain.

Also surprised they have not come up with a 4 day format for the Ryder Cup to squeeze some extra revenue out of it.

Personally would be interested to see...

Thursday / Friday / Saturday
3 Foursomes
3 Fourball (all 24 players in a session)

Sunday
12 Singles

I enjoy the long days, but already there is a slight issue with having enough daylight at that time of year and players are warming up in the dark, as well as fans arriving well before dawn and generally speaking afternoon matches are teeing off with players still on the course from the morning.

I also thought the session in 2010 where all 24 players were involved was great. No hiding place and means you have genuine specialists in foursome format, which is the truest form of pairs play, imo.

I guess because it is so successful, it's unlikely to change.

I highly doubt Niemann was gesturing that at all. As the young lad is known for slow play himself. Looks to me like a finger snap (where you snap your index finger against the middle finger) as I am lead to believe he was watching his teammates on the big screen make a winning putt.

Can you imagine England (or any other country qualified for Euro 2020) not playing any friendlies before the tournament, because they don't have the same level of intensity?

Sounds absurd.

When it was first announced I thought the European tour had missed a big trick. Seemed it would give more chances to find pairings, give newer players experience etc.
Kinda pleased it didn't seem to affect the Ryder Cup
