I don't know, I'm not counting that high. 😄 It's probably somewhere between 350 and 400 members in total.
:) So about 5% are single digit... makes a big difference when trying to compare "who wins comps" stats from different clubs...

Guess the EG overview now makes more sense: my hcp puts me into 56% in the club, 38% in the county and 42% in England, i.e. our club average is higher than county/England...

No it doesn't, what makes a difference is how many played in comps pro-rata the duffers

As stats go, pretty useless. You've restricted the filed to 20, you've got 3/4 playing off 12 or less, of course you're going to have a fair smattering of single digit winners. You haven't rolled out what those are, but here's my away club stats

Thanks for posting your stats, but what do the columns mean? What's the difference between a medal, a qualifier, a trophy? What's S1, S2 etc and what are the numbers?

Very small sample size of one club, I can't be bothered to write down all the details, but the highest handicap winner at my club this year is 15. In fact the last three medals were won by handicaps of 5, 4, 9. It tends to be the mid/high single figures golfers who win at my club (i.e. 4-9), because they are quite consistent and there is a lot of them. Apart from the club champs obviously which is dominated by the plus hc's.

I've just looked through all of our major/board comp winners this year, because I was curious as much as anything. Here are the results.

Notes: PH is playing handicap, their index will generally be a shot or two higher since we all lose shots at my course. p = points, otherwise it's net score (our par is 68). The [+6] was a bogey comp.

Not a single figure player in sight. In fact only two people who are lower than me! And I'm crap.

I think this says more about your course. Grims Dyke is very short, how many plus handicap members do you have?

You mention only 21 single figure golfers. There are 21 golfers at my club with a handicap of 1 or better, and 180 single figure players, I think that's more representative of a typical club with 400-500 playing members.

We are a small club. I would say the average handicap of winners is about 10. We have one guy who hovers between +/- 1 and he is right up there the vast majority of the time, whether it's swindles or club comps. Maybe a smaller club makes it easier to ensure that scores are going in correctly.

If people are playing short easy courses I would expect higher handicaps to fair better on a more regular basis.

My course is reasonably long, and reasonably difficult, especially when windy. We don’t have 20+ handicaps regularly winning by 4 shots/points.

The monthly medals are typically won with a net score of 2 or 3 under in both divisions.

Maybe we don’t have club culture of handicap manipulation that some do 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sorry, I spotted something and need to come back to this post. How can you have a 26 handicap club champion? Surely the objective of the club championship is to determine the best player in the club?

I put (net) in brackets to indicate that was simply the net prize at the club champs. Obviously the gross club champion was single figures (off 3 I think).

But how can someone claim to be nett club champion... it doesn't mean anything, it's an oxymoron isn't it?

I was a member at a club that has 180 playing on a Wednesday and over 240 on a Saturday all year round, for there Club Championship there was always a trophy for the nett winner, but obviously the Gross was the Club Champion.

We have both. Obviously, only one actually counts, but we do it to encourage as many people as possible to turn up and play on the day. It helps get a nice atmosphere in the bar/ terrace when the proper golfers are coming up the last. Doesn't seem any harm in it.

I think a lot of clubs have a gross and a net at the club champs, we've discussed it on here before. Of course the gross winner is the club champion. The net prize has a different name/trophy and is secondary to the main prize.

In the discussion there were one or two clubs whose club champion was nett and there was no gross champion.

If I was a 26 handicapper and won the club championship i would feel too embarrassed to pick up the trophy 🫣
I know of high handicappers who want the Club Champs to be a net event.......

When I started playing this game the aim was to get to a single figure handicap, now it's about winning a net event, when they give a gross prize the high handicappers complain.

No, most clubs have a net club champion. Very unusual not to have that, your club is the one out of step, in fact until I moved to England I'd never heard of this anywhere
