preshot routine

i try not to over think my shots,i look at the lie my ball has, look at were i wish my shot to finish after taking into account the weather conditions and course condition( hard running fairways, greens etc or like a mud bath ) chose the club best suited and take 2 or 3 practise strokes to get a feel for the shot and just play the shot like i practiced, over complicating the stroke and filling your head with WHAT you think you should do only causes problems.

One practice swing stood behind ball. Pick my line and then look at a spot on the ball on that line and line myself up from that. Then hit my shot. Bit different for chips etc but similar sort of thing.

Try to judge lie and stuff as I get to the ball, get a yardage, pick club, pick a target, practice swing, line up target with a mark(mud, diff colour grass anything really) in front of the ball, the play the shot. Most of this happens as habit now, pretty strict on following it, doesn't take long at all.

Get to my ball and assess it's lie and any impediments. 2 practice swings at the side of the ball, more to feel the shot I want to play.

Stand behind the ball, pick my landing area and start line.

Take my address position and play my shot.

30 seconds at most.

Stand back from the ball and get my grip correct, put my right foot forward and place my club at the back of the ball, place my left foot where I want it and move my right foot where I want it, waggle my club till I am comfortable, place my weight on my left foot, waggle, go!

I do the same for every full shot, if I get interrupted I start over. I love it.

The first thing I do. Funny this started as an unconscious move. But now Incorporated into the routine. Is to unfasten and refasten the Velcro flap on the glove. Its my switch to get from banter mode into shot mode, if that makes sense. I then stand behind the ball and pick my target where I want the ball to land. Plus a interim target on my line. Then get a full mental picture of the ball flying from the tee following the target line and landing it the perfect place(it rarely goes there when I hit it. But its important to picture it doing it). I will be swishing the club back and forward as I am doing it, just to stay loose. Then move round to the side of the ball keeping the interim target in sight, plus the mental picture. set up to the ball and just hit it.(then go and look for it in the rough). Takes a long time to write it. But not much more than 15/20 seconds to do.

P.s. also do it before every shot on the practise ground too.

Line myself up, place club behind ball quick glance to check in line and hit. It's that simple.
I have more of a routine for chips and pitches as I feel I need more accuracy in what I'm doing with them (say a 10 yard shot with the 56* as oppose to a 140 yard 8 iron smash).

remember a pre-shot routine only becomes a routine when you don't have to think about it. Make it as natural as possible don't over complicate.

Mine is automatic, been doing exactly the same thing for years.
1 Practice swing behind ball.
Look down the line and pick my target
Over ball with feet together, set ball position
Set posture
1 look at target
Deep breath in
Exhale fully
Pull trigger.

It's a lot quicker than it sounds and the only time it changes is for feel shots and putts.

I stand behind the ball hold the club up get the line from ball to target and on that line find a mark 1-2 feet in front of the ball, Then place club behind ball, step step. Then have a few looks up then swing with ease.

The only thing I do differently to what has been said is to have a swing cue (as opposed to a mechanics based swing thought).
Feel swing cues could be a good tempo or feeling balanced at address. Visual swing cues could be an image of the flight of the ball (draw/fade/high/low) or a mental image of the target.

Get to the ball, roll my shoulders as this is my routine trigger, asses the lie, pick club, stand back 6 foot from the ball, hold my club up from the ball, see the shot in my mind, pick a target, address the ball, 2 club waggles, one last look at the target to get it into my mind then pull the trigger.
I had a shorter one that had swing thoughts and all sorts of pointless rubbish in it but over the last few weeks I have built this routine and I have practiced it more on the range than practicing my swing and it's really helped the way I play. I will work on the swing mechanics in November ready for next season but this season it's this swing and nothing else.
