Honestly yes, I think it makes a difference which ball you play. I have recently tried the nxt tour s and been very impressed with it. I have used (in the last couple of years) srixon soft feels, wilson dx2, nike pd, proV, callaway warbird and my favourite the taylormade rocketballz.

A lot of comments on here have been about distance, and yes I think I have squuezed a few more yards out of the premium balls, but I think the feel that suits your short game is paramount.
The best rounds I have recorded have all been thanks to an excellent days putting and chipping. This is where I think the correct ball makes a difference for you.

Midweek I played a casual game with some mates, played with a callaway warbird. It felt like hitting a rock, had no touch and couldn't hole anything. Yesterday played in a comp, went back to TM rocketballz. Good distance, soft enough for chipping and got consistent roll with the flat stick, shot a net 70 with only 12 putts on the back 9.

Distance is good, but touch is great, and I think you can get a dozen balls for less than 20 quid which will do just fine.

I didn't use to be that impressed with the proV but have recently found them to be excellent in the wind.
The wilson dx2 are excellent value for money and have several boxes for less than 15 quid.
A great all rounder are these rocketballz, about 18 quid a dozen. Recommended by me.
Had a couple dozen nxt tour s (lake balls) & have been very impressed as a good all rounder and great off the putter. This may well become my new preferred (at the right price!)

Hope this helps.
