Ive noticed many golfers practice before a round with practice balls and when they go to chipping and putting still use them, or golfers who turn up for a round and go on the chipping and/or putting greens and use a few varied balls.

Some of the most important shots you will make in a round will be short ones or putts, always use the ball you will play with and others of same make/type/rating for those practice shots.

Ive played with many who struggle with their early putts in a round or those little chips and some of it is partly due to using knackered practice balls or used balls of a different type on practice area, so often seeing their early ones fly past the hole or stop way short, sometimes just a golf error but aided by different response of the sparkling new ball that only comes out to play on the first tee lol.

I have to agree. My practice bag is made up entirely of old Titleist, mainly proV, but also includes a few old Callaway Itours and HX. Basically these are what I use on the course but also if I'm going to the trouble of using the practice ground (and having to go out and collect the balls) I want something that gives me decent feedback and I can shape. If I wanted to hit a rock (Pinnacle, Top Flite, Noodle etc) I may as well got to the range and use their rocks

My practice bag has allsorts, but I will only practice chipping with old proVs, so I have to do a bit of sorting before hitting the chipping green.

my practise balls are old premium balls hx tours nike plats etc they all pretty similar really as for putting i use brand new balls out the bag

Crikey...I wondered where I was going wrong. I normally tip out 20-30 donnays onto the practice putting green 1-2 hours before a round and take over all 9 (?) holes for minimum 200 putts. So much wasted energy, I should just hit for 15 mins with a brand new pro-v (or dx2, in my case).
D'oh

You should join my course. We have 18 holes on the practice green, so you could pepper it with Donnays, all for a princely capital outlay of £3.50.

:D :D :D Why the facetious reply to this tip?

Sorry herb....Sarcasm IS the lowest form of wit.

I thought everyone did their last minute putting and chipping with the balls in their bag planned for the course, not the old bricks in the shag/tube.

Apologies....
