Practice green - chipping aloud or not

Sounds to me as though the old girl was quite nice about it. She didn't do in front of her pals. She took the effort to come and tell you in person. As a result it may prevent you getting a rollocking from a committee member or the like.

A lot of clubs don't allow chipping onto putting greens because, as others have said, some people may be daft and try the lob shots.
If you are hitting these shots you don't need to know how they react on landing you just need to know where they land and that can be done on any peice of turf.

My advice would be to ask an official for clarification of the rule and perhaps suggest they replace the sign if indeed that is the case.

my new club has both a putting green and one for chipping,i was playing in a comp at LANCASTER G C about 10 years ago and they have a small putting green near the club house,putting away nicely then whack,ball bounces of my ankle,hit by the slob looking individual who thought the putting only sign was for others,a bladed lob wedge chipped a bone in my ankle, NO COMP and NO GOLF for 6 weeks after.

Sounds to me like you're more disappointed in yourself, to have been told off and all that, when you were just minding your own business and getting in some practise.

Let it go.

Most putting greens are non-chipping, so I'd never even try until asking for a green light.

Ours is "No Chipping" but there's also no sign. If I tried to stop someone, I'd try to do it in the nicest possible way, which is where she probably went wrong.

well turns out the green is putting only but the sign had been removed over the winter to be restored. But the good news is that they are looking in to getting a green made by the practice bunker which is also getting restored this week. so at least i know now what the rules are.

I was'nt overly bothered about not being able to chip there but it was more the way she said it as if she was the one making the rule. Plus to me with no sign being there i took that as being able to chip.

its pretty relaxed at my club. ive chipped on the putting green plenty of times although i wont do it if someones already putting or comes over to putt while im at it. i prefer to do my chipping around 1 of the 18 greens out on the course. more variation and a few slopes. our putting green is flat as a pancake!

Be careful about practising on the course prior to comps, I believe you could be DQ'd from some (medal rounds?).

Ahh those "no chipping" signs of historical importance that need restoration and TLC

I spoke to a couple of juniors not that long ago about it. I do not care about people chipping on the practice green as it is not going to do it any harm. But when there is 2 of them chipping from one side to the other straight across others that are trying to use it and then flopping shots up in the air, you are going to end up with someone being hit by a ball. I think that is why clubs do not allow chipping on the practice green.

Our practice green is really small and close to the clubhouse but I've seen a few of the better members chipping onto it, despite the signs saying not to.
